About Justin
I have a PhD in philosophy and political science from Michigan, a JD from Ohio State (ha!, but it's true), and degrees from Cambridge University and Princeton. I clerked on the US Court of Appeals and the US District Court.
More to the point, I have written dozens of published articles for law reviews, philosophy journals, and other publications, and scores, perhaps hundreds, of briefs submitted to courts, as well as drafting scores of judicial opinions.
I care about writing well and conveying difficult, often technical, material in a reasonably simple and comprehensible manner.

"And gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly teche." -Chaucer on The Clerke of Oxenford.
I can help with difficult readings and improving your writing (yours, not ChatGPT's). I'll discuss your assigned readings or set texts to read and discuss, and review and help edit your papers or chapters. I've written a dissertation and published several articles out of it, advised several, and I'm happy to work with you on yours, or any other scholarly writing. I have techniques to overcome dissertation and other writer's block which worked for me and my students. .
My favorite writer (I realized on reflection) is the musical theater writer Stephen Sondheim, because of his clear, simple, and exact expression of complex ideas and feelings, leavened with wit.
My approach is Socratic rather than lecturey: I'll ask questions, and, based on your answers, follow up with even more questions, as well as provide written comments on your writing. I'll annotate your writing and discuss my suggestions with you in the sessions. I have my own ideas, of course, but my goal is to help you express yours better.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I have a doctorate in English from UC Berkeley, and even at my level, I have found Justin's support exceptionally helpful. His training in philosophy and law have made him a clear and powerful thinker, an excellent writer, and a very dependable and valuable guide.
Justin is an experienced legal scholar, teacher, and writer. I’ve been a lawyer for 20 years, and consider myself an excellent writer, but I still find Justin’s edits and suggestions incredibly helpful. I recommend him highly.
I have known Justin for over 25 years, primarily in his capacity as a participant in numerous online forums where he has written on a variety of topics, ranging from the law to politics, to Marxist theory, to topics in philosophy such as ethics and the philosophy of mind.
I have found that even the most abstruse topics, he is able to break them down so that even the average person can understand what he is talking about. To my mind, that is the sign of a good teacher.View more recommendations
