About Mariposa
I was born in Montreal and grew up in France living there till less than a year ago when I came to Vancouver to study at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where I am currently doing a dual degree in physics and education. I have always been curious about the world, it’s people’s and its cultures. When I get the chance, I like to travel and when at home I am quite the bookworm. I appreciate the breadth of works and the ways of thinking that the three languages I speak open up to me.
I love sharing my enjoyment of a subject through teaching and passing on the knowledge that I value. I am particularly interested in methods for teaching science and I did a lot of volunteer work, tutoring, designing activities and materials for teaching, preparing challenges, going into classrooms, etc, and this is the direction I want to take my career in. My interest in teaching and different methods of learning is, however, not limited to science, and I have taught English as a private tutor in France and in exchange for room and board in Spain.

I like to take a more alternative approach to teaching/learning and believe that there is no one method that will work for everyone, but instead, it is the teacher’s job to adapt the method to the student taking into account his goals and the way he retains and assimilates new material the best. These can then be incorporated into games, songs, stories, or role-playing activities that involve the student calling up his knowledge of the language in an active way. I can also provide more standard exercises, either for specific points that need practice, or as the foundation of the curriculum if so desired. I offer the first lesson free, partly so we can take the time to find the best way of working.

Deadly! I had a great time learning french from you. You are really kind and at the same time serious when teaching. The combination of two helped me learn French at a faster pace. The aspect that you are a native speaking french teacher, helped me learn the pronunciations correctly and overall, I really enjoyed your teaching methods.
