About Maya

I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in French and Spanish at Regis University in Denver, CO. Learning foreign languages has been my passion since I was a kid because I love being able to communicate and help others. I learned Spanish growing up speaking it at home with my mom. Ameliorating my Spanish was very important to me which led me to study Spanish at the high school and collegiate levels. This allowed me to have both a cultural and academic understanding of the language. I attended a K-8 French immersion school, learning the language daily for 9 years. I continued to study French in high school and college. I have tutored people of all ages and backgrounds and love to help students gain confidence in their language abilities. I have since returned to work at my former elementary school to help students learn the French language and build skills to understand the material. I have also been invited to work as a tutor for my university after being recommended by faculty. My elementary school has a mural that says "Languages open the doors to the world." I am eager to help you open the doors in your world.

About the lesson

I believe everyone can and should learn a foreign language! My goal as an educator is to build confidence within my students and to provide them with the tools to succeed. I have over fifteen years of foreign language education under my belt, including immersion, high school and college levels. I have been fortunate enough to have both educated students at those levels and been a student as well. This helps me as a tutor because I understand the best tips and tricks to learn French because I have done it all!

I like my tutoring to go "outside the box". In my sessions, we listen to French pop and analyze the lyrics, gossip about your neighbors in French to practice conversation, have our own mini book club to discuss books we're reading, learning songs to memorize grammar, etc. I try to create a safe space for my students so they feel comfortable trying new things when learning. You won't believe the results from trying something new!
