About Kaiyuan
Hi, I’m Kaiyuan, a native Mandarin speaker currently studying a Master of Social Work at the University of Melbourne. I hold a Level 1-B certificate in the Putonghua Proficiency Test and have two years of experience teaching Chinese to international students across HSK Levels 1–6.
I also achieved an overall IELTS Academic score of 8.0, which allows me to communicate comfortably in English and explain Chinese concepts clearly to learners who are still building their Mandarin confidence.
What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing students move from understanding individual words to actually expressing themselves naturally in Chinese. My background in social work has also taught me to listen carefully, communicate patiently and adapt to different personalities and learning styles.
I want to create a relaxed and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and gradually building confidence. Whether you are learning Mandarin for study, travel, work, HSK preparation or simply personal interest, I would be very happy to support you along the way.

I believe Mandarin is best learned through understanding and real communication rather than simply memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. My lessons combine practical conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing, with the content adjusted to each student’s goals and current level. For beginners, I can use English to explain difficult concepts clearly and gradually increase the amount of Mandarin used as confidence develops.
I am a native Mandarin speaker with a Level 1-B certificate in the Putonghua Proficiency Test and two years of experience teaching Chinese to international students from HSK 1 to HSK 6. I also achieved an IELTS Academic score of 8.0, so I am comfortable teaching and explaining Mandarin bilingually in both Chinese and English.
Lessons are suitable for complete beginners, intermediate and advanced learners, including students preparing for HSK exams, improving everyday conversation, developing pronunciation and speaking confidence, or strengthening reading and writing. I am also happy to adapt lessons to each learner’s interests, pace and personal goals.
My background in Social Work has also trained me to listen carefully, communicate patiently and recognize that different learners need different ways of explanation. I aim to create lessons where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and actually using Mandarin rather than being afraid of getting every sentence perfect.
