About Gemma
Hello, I’m Dr Gemma, a PGCE-qualified lecturer, author and professional editor with a PGCE and over 20 years’ experience working in education across Wales.
My doctoral research in Creative & Critical Writing is underpinned by critical theory, exploring questions of power, politics, social policy and cultural representation. This interdisciplinary approach allows me to support students in developing a deep understanding of sociological thinking and contemporary social issues.
As well as my PhD, my undergraduate degree in Politics and Media explored a wide range of social science disciplines, including journalism, public relations, social policy and political analysis. This background allows me to help students connect sociological theory with real-world social and political contexts.
Earlier in my career I worked at Swansea University (Student Services) as a Social Policy Note-taker and Mentor. This role involved working closely with students, lecturers and SEN officers to ensure accessible learning environments, including preparing lecture notes and supporting students across a range of modules.
Topics I worked with during this time included:
Disability and Social Policy
Gender and Social Policy
Criminology
Social Policy in Britain
American Studies
Covering Campaigns & Elections
Investigative Journalism
Public Relations
Media Representation
Film and Television
Politics
Current Affairs
Global Politics
This experience strengthened my ability to support students from diverse learning backgrounds, and continues to inform my teaching approach today.

My sociology lessons are designed to help students develop a clear understanding of sociological theory, critical analysis and strong academic writing.
I support students across a range of levels, including:
GCSE Sociology
A-Level Sociology
Access to Higher Education courses
Undergraduate and Postgraduate sociology and social policy modules
Lessons typically focus on:
understanding key sociological theories
applying theory to contemporary social issues
developing critical thinking and argument
essay structure and exam preparation
research, analytical and academic writing skills
Because of my interdisciplinary background in politics, media and social policy, I am particularly interested in helping students explore how power, culture and representation shape society.
I also support neurodiverse learners, using differentiated teaching strategies to ensure lessons are accessible and engaging.
My goal is to help students move beyond memorising theories and instead develop the confidence to think critically about society while applying and articulating their ideas clearly in essays and exams.

I met Gemma when studying for my A levels in 2025 and she helped so much!
I was studying English Literature and Gemma made this course so much more interesting, she always encouraged me to do my best and to keep gong when it was hard.
She not only provided me with advice for my English A levels but she was also a friend that I could talk to and she is so kind and listened to everything I said in all my sessions and every session was engaging and I learnt so much! She made studying fun and helped me to write my personal statement too! With this I was accepted to study Speech and Language in Cardiff Metropolitan.
I have Gemma to thank for so much and I am so appreciative for her!
She’s the best English tutor you could get! She is a powerful women!
