About Rory
I am a Glasgow-based composer, sound artist, and lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art, where I teach electronic music production, sound design, and synthesis at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I hold a First-Class degree and a Master of Research in sound art and music technology, with a focus on generative systems, spatial audio, and experimental composition.
Alongside my academic role, I work as a studio engineer and active practitioner, producing and performing electronic music across ambient, experimental, and club contexts. My work combines technical expertise in Ableton Live, modular synths, and MaxMSP with a strong focus on creative exploration and critical listening.
I am passionate about helping students develop both technical confidence and their own artistic voice, whether they are beginners or more advanced producers looking to refine their practice or explore new directions.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether you are completely new to music production or looking to develop a more advanced creative practice in electronic music, sound design, or synthesis. I focus on building both technical confidence and creative independence, using Ableton Live as a core platform alongside broader approaches to composition, sound design, and critical listening.
Depending on your interests, we can work on areas such as electronic music production, arrangement and mixing, sound design, modular synthesis, spatial audio, or experimental composition. I also support students preparing portfolios for further study, including art school or music technology courses.
My teaching style is practical, exploratory, and supportive. I aim to create a space where experimentation is encouraged, and where technical concepts are always grounded in making real work. Sessions are paced to suit you, and can be structured or more open-ended depending on how you prefer to learn.
I bring professional experience as a Glasgow School of Art lecturer, studio engineer, and active sound artist, and I understand how to support both creative development and technical skill-building across a wide range of levels.
