We all want our students to like us, but I’ve learned that the better question is, How can we get our students to trust that we have their best interests in our hearts and minds? I’ve found that when my students believe that their success and well-being are important to me, everyone benefits. To this end, words can only go so far. It’s what I do each day that matters: Am I listening to them? Am I connecting the material to their lives and goals? Am I helping them to establish what those goals are? Do my delivery and classroom activities promote their learning and success? Am I fair? Do I treat them as I would want a teacher to treat my own child (or to have treated me)?
