About Faris
I am a recent graduate from the University of St Andrews, with a degree of the first class in Modern History and Arabic. I have accepted a training contract at a city law firm, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, and am set to start my postgraduate studies in law in September 2026. In the meantime, I hope to continue developing my passion for history, as well as earn some savings. I have extensive experience in the childcare sector, initially volunteering to aid at my local primary school at 13, where I was responsible for organising and playing sports with children every Friday P.E session. This interest continued as I grew older, volunteering as a teaching assistant at Raynes Park High, where I worked with multiple classes, including KS2 and KS3 maths and English, as well as BTEC geography and a couple months in the SEN centre. In a more professional capacity, I have been part of the senior staff team (as Site Manager and Assistant Site Manager) for Activ Camps London for over 3 years, working each summer I returned home from university. Here I was responsible for first aid, earning my paediatric first aid certificate, as well as the safe running of a sports camp and the management of its staff. I was DBS certified for this role and still have my certificate. Although my passions are in history and law, I look back on my school days with fondness and hope to ease the academic burden on school children and enable them to achieve their potential, so they might also pursue their passions in the future.

I have volunteered as a teaching assistant with various age groups, ranging from KS2, to BTEC, to GCSE, and even tutored IB students in multiple subjects including Maths, English Literature, History and Psychology. My history lessons are catered for each individual student, thus my approach focuses on tackling the unique challenges faced by each student. Where some students may be confident in the historical content they have studied in school, lessons will primarily focus on enabling the student to use that knowledge effectively by improving their essay writing capabilities or time management skills in exam conditions by providing helpful strategies and organisational structures to make essay writing straightforward. For students who are confident writers but struggling to commit historical fact to memory, I can provide helpful revision techniques and recall strategies. In any case, I strive to establish a balance in my lessons between establishing historical facts and connecting them to an argumentative narrative in their exams/coursework. For some students, history is not a passion and I understand that it can sometimes be a case of just needing a specific grade. However, where possible, I share my passion and knowledge of history, by giving insight into the lesser known stories and attributing them to students' interests whether it be music, sports, culture, politics, mathematical or scientific developments. Hopefully I can make the content more enjoyable for students and subsequently more memorable. Understanding that this is not always possible, I will always strive to engage students before anything else, but keep lessons primarily focused on the marking rubric and adhering to these criteria in order to achieve the best possible result. I am very familiar with GCSE and IB coursework and exam structures but can also help with A-Level students. I am most confident with the content of modern history, and have maintained a global approach to my historical studies at university. My dissertation was in civil rights in the UK, however I have completed modules on the Middle East, the Cold War, India following English colonisation, the design of Fascist Empires, including Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy and Stalinist Russia.
