About Dan

I am a former teacher, having worked within UK Independent and State schools. Prior to this, I studied my undergraduate and master's degrees at the University of Cambridge. I am an expert classroom practitioner, and am able to support and challenge you to be the best that you can be. I have an in-depth knowledge of the History curriculum at GCSE and A-Level, and am happy to support you in any way that you need.

My motivation to teach and tutor stems from wanting to get to know my students and to experience their own unique learning styles. Take an identical lesson, teach it to two different students and you will always have a new experience, fresh questions and lively discussion. I take great satisfaction and pride in awakening a love of History in my students.

About the lesson

As a teacher with QTS, PGCE and three years' experience within both state and independent schools, my lessons are informed by up-to-date pedagogy. All lessons begin with knowledge retrieval in the form of a Do-Now, with a 'Challenge' question designed to stretch student knowledge and encourage higher order thinking. Content is taught through a mixture of direct teacher instruction and reading, and assessed formatively through a mixture of fun activities which may involve comprehension questions, quizzes, shorter writing tasks. When the student's knowledge reaches a certain level, I also like to encourage debate within lesson, to interrogate sources, discussing reliability and provenance, as well as discussing the bigger picture in terms of the overall significance of historical events and how they fit into their wider context. Finally, I am convinced that modelling success in essay writing is the key to achieving top grades. During longer writing tasks, I will demonstrate how to write given essays in order to achieve top grades, and help my students to incorporate best practice into their own writing process.
