About Olivia

Hello! I am an English Literature graduate from the university of Edinburgh, but more importantly just a huge fan of everything entailed in the literature, reading and writing.

The draw of teaching for me is rooted in knowing how important it is to inspire confidence and, subsequently, passion when it comes to learning, because when I was at school this made all the difference! It was only once I'd gained confidence in my ability in English Literature (which happened as a result of extra tutoring too!) that I was able to discover my love of it, and it is largely due to this that I was able to get into the university I did and go on to graduate with a First Class degree. I believe the means to achieve this confidence is simply by removing the trepidation and lack of understanding surrounding a subject, going over the basics, and endless practising. It's often only at this point that we can really start to enjoy a subject! Overall, my goal is to make students see the work you do for this subject as something exciting and interesting, of course, but also ultimately as something familiar - taking away that feeling of a scary new exam text looming on a page, and replacing it with an abundance of familiar devices and ideas to look out for, and that feeling of assurance in your own abilities that really cannot be overestimated!

My approach to tutoring is very much geared towards inspiring students to feel confident in their writing abilities by means of getting to grips with the basics and practising writing essay plans and annotating together, which will give them an idea of what to look out for in future texts.

Lessons will be one hour long (but can be longer depending on what the student prefers). My approach will be personalised to the individual student based on their needs/priorities, but an example of a typical lesson plan could be: annotating and discussing a text, or two comparatively; creating an essay plan for a question of our choosing, either focusing on a close reading or a comparative study of multiple texts; and finally writing the essay either in what’s left of the lesson or as homework for the week. These texts can either be new and of our choosing, or texts the student has already been set at school. The essay written will later be discussed together. Alongside this process we will go over the terminology, common themes and patterns, the use of sound, metre and the deviation from it, structure, imagery and symbolism, style and syntax, narrative voice, context, and an overall subjective interpretation - which I believe is often undervalued!

I am happy to teach any age between years 7-13, and will tailor the lessons accordingly. I am also able to help with exam prep if needed, having had experience sitting these exams, and with a general awareness of what it is the examiners look for in an English essay.
