About Jamie
In 2017, I graduated from the University of Liverpool with a Master of Arts in International Relations and Security (Merit). Previously, I had completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Central Lancashire, achieving a high 2:1 in History.
Admittedly, I have limited experience in tutoring academic subjects at present, but I am passionate about History and Politics and keen to help learners succeed. I regularly help a younger relative with his secondary school History homework. Not only is he receiving top marks in school, he has now developed a real passion for History and intends to study History at college and university.
I do have tutoring experience unrelated to academic subjects that has given me confidence in my ability to learn others and enthusiasm to pursue tutoring further. I currently tutor guitar to one young person and also provide training sessions for young Goalkeepers twice a week. Within 3 months, I went from coaching one Goalkeeper to four. This not only demonstrates my knowledge and ability to teach, but also shows the fun nature of my tutoring. I believe if the learner enjoys the subject and the session, they will learn better.

I believe in tailoring the session to suit the individual; each student is unique and learns differently so I will adjust my teaching approach, techniques and materials accordingly. I will work collaboratively with the student to develop a learning technique that is right for them. I will break the work down into smaller, more manageable steps and utilise various learning materials and exercises to make the work accessible, fun and interesting. I will include fun, interactive activities and games to engage the student and to cement and extend knowledge. Learning can and should be enjoyable.
It is important to include assessment skills in tutoring sessions, such as:
- Knowing what the question is asking and how to respond
- How to write an essay
- How to revise effectively and sit an exam
Leading on from the last point, I will use past exam papers as preparation to make the student more comfortable and confident when sitting their actual exams.
The aim is to not only have the student learn the subject matter, but also learn and develop important analytical and interpretative skills. This way students can, with increasing confidence and assertiveness, effectively read and extract information from primary and secondary sources. Importantly, these skills are not confined to the academic fields of History and Politics but are transferable to other fields of study.
