About Daniel
I have devoted my whole adult life to the study of the English language! It is the language of my father sand the language that rules the world. People the world over want to come to the English speaking world and enjoy its way of life and reap its bounty. to do this they must be able to speak, read and write English. This is a powerful incentive!
I was born into two old Anglo-American families, so I grew up speaking the language of my ancestors. But even we are not born with the ability to write it. It must be learned. For me learning to write was a very arduous process, for I was born into two families where no no one graduated from high school, let alone college! I received no material, moral, or monetary support from family. I had to make my own way. I was also born with disability--cerebral palsy which made it hard for me to drive, so I had hitch- hike to school sign in hand in all kinds of weather. I succeeded in my endeavor despite all of this adversity.

To learn to write you must write! I believe students must master the basics-grammar, composition(the canons of style) rhetoric(the art of persuasion) and diction. To do this, students should study grammar, write a paper using each of the rhetorical modes, and create a strong vocabulary by looking up the meaning of words if there is any doubt about their meaning.
I tutored students on a one on one basis in the writing lab at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, Virginia. I relied on the student's papers. Textbooks were seen as merely aid to the process. I would insist that students bring whatever text they were working on at the time. I would read it and correct the first six errors and using a variation of the Socratic Method ask the tutee, "Why did you write it this way?" or "Could you have written this differently? In this way we identified each student's deficits and corrected them.
