About Catherine

I graduated from UCLA in June 2025 with degrees in political science and gender studies after attending the Westminster Schools in Atlanta. During my time at UCLA, I served as a News editor for the student newspaper for two years and as the editor in chief of the Undergraduate Law Journal. Each of my summers in college, I interned for public defenders offices in Georgia and DC. I also tutored elementary school kids in English my junior year.
I am consistent, patient, and trustworthy as a tutor. One of my goals is comfortability in the learning environment, because that is one of the only things that will spur genuine understanding and growth as a student. I am eager to use the beautiful knowledge I gained in high school and at UCLA to expand anyone’s ability to thrive confidently in their writing and understanding of texts.

English

I started out at UCLA as an English major because of my love of reading and writing. I quickly learned I wanted to focus my academic experience on the development of my political thought, but I continued to take English classes throughout my undergraduate career.
My biggest goal in tutoring English is developing the fundamental understanding of what makes a good argument. While English literature is also about grasping the material that you are reading, your ultimate goal is still to ARGUE your overall understanding of the literature, any critiques of the literature, and the broader impact the piece had on the literary world. Therefore, my approach to, for example writing essays or preparing for an English test, is to spend plenty of time developing the student’s understanding of the literature before diving into the contribution they will make. The beautiful thing about any literature is that it means different things to different people and can be interpreted in a variety of different ways. That being said, I also understand the frequent rigidity of English classes, and the desire of professors for students to argue in line with the professor’s understanding of the text. As such, my goal is to help a student understand a piece of literature from their own lens while also being informed by their professor’s lessons.
Finally, on the topic of creative writing, it is one of my strongest passions in life. I took several creative writing classes at UCLA, and figured out not only how to write creatively myself, but how to empower others to do so as well. Creative writing is ultimately informed by your own experience, which can often be hard to encapsulate into words. I am here to help figure out the right word choice, the best framing, and how to stay true to yourself.
Ultimately, I’m just excited to teach and share my knowledge of English, reading, and writing. I also know that any teacher or tutor learns from their students, and that impassions me even more.
