About Dan
I'm a Design & Technology specialist and Head of Department at an academically selective HMC independent school in the North East, where I teach from KS3 through to sixth form. My background spans the full breadth of the subject, product design, textiles, electronics and workshop-based making, and I work with the AQA specifications every day, alongside CAD, laser cutting and machine work.
That breadth matters for tutoring. DT is a subject where students often get stuck at the seam between two things: the theory paper and the making, or the idea and the manufacture. Having taught across all of it, I can usually spot where the gap actually is.

My lessons are relaxed and hands-on, but they have a clear job to do. I start by making sure the fundamentals are genuinely solid, materials, processes, why a designer chooses one over another, because almost every lost mark I see at GCSE and A-Level traces back to a basic idea that was never properly understood, not to a lack of effort. Once that groundwork is there, students find the harder material falls into place quickly and their confidence follows. Expect real examples, plenty of sketching and discussion, and questions back at you rather than a lecture.
