About Will

Hello! My name is Will and I am a PGDE student at the University of Edinburgh (History), online history tutor and video-maker.

I have lots of experience both in achieving success myself - A* History A-level, First Class Honours, Distinction in my Masters and two academic awards - but also in tutoring others!

I run my own history YouTube channel where I communicate my passion for the subject and for helping students like you.

For me, the absolute key for success at school comes down to generating INTEREST in the subject. With history and philosophy in particular, the more interested you can become in the subject the easier it is to learn. I am an excellent communicator and, unlike some tutors, friendly and enthusiastic!

My lessons are deliberately designed to be as engaging and useful as possible. Having spent years myself battling with PROCRASTINATION I have many useful strategies and techniques that will help you to maintain focus and concentration when studying.

One of the biggest challenges young people face is that of distraction. An entire online industry exists just to distract you. If you learn how to overcome these distractions you can truly mark yourself out as an exceptional student. It will be my mission to make this happen!

PERSONALISED STUDY TECHNIQUES:

The first five to ten minutes of every tutoring session will focus on your specific needs as a student. While there are many commonalities, every student’s abilities and struggles are unique to them. Whatever your particular challenges - procrastination, writing, comprehension or simply a lack of confidence or self-belief - we will focus on strategies to help you succeed. So much of what actually keeps students from achieving their target grade comes down to the simple question of concentration and overcoming distraction and solutions to these problems will form a large part of the initial stages of tutoring.

ACTIVE RECALL:

So many students make the mistake of thinking that reading and rereading a study guide or their own revision notes is the best way to learn. It really isn’t!

My lessons make use of the best methods for learning new information, above all, using active recall.

Active recall requires making an effort to remember something you've learned once before. The act of doing so helps you remember even better in the long-term. Whether using quizzes, practice papers, or getting you to write or explain verbally a new concept, active recall exercises will enabled you to remember far more than you thought you would be capable of!

PRACTICE PAPERS / WRITING

Research looking at the most effective study activities has shown that the students who do the best spend far longer doing practice papers - the actual activity that gets rewarded in exams - than anything else. A large part of the lessons - particularly once we have thoroughly covered the content - will be spent WRITING and answering practice papers

VIDEO:

I make YouTube history videos that offer specific guidance on history topics! I use many of the insights of my students to help inform these videos but they also are provided free for all students I tutor. Making history and philosophy as interactive and engaging as possible is crucial to get the best results.

He would always come to each lesson with a well prepared lesson plan and would cater to my personal teaching preference. During my time with Will he utilised resources and textbooks specific to my exam board to ensure I was receiving most relevant information. Will taught with a great balance of content but also exam preparation which gave me a lot of confidence in tackling the different question styles which appear on the A Level exam. Will was also very flexible according to my schedule, for example, while we would usually have a tutoring session weekly, in the build up to my exams we were able to increase the number of sessions and the duration.
