The first step I take whenever I begin tutoring a new student is to identify his or her individual learning needs through diagnostic tests, but also by asking the student about what has or has not worked for them. If they are unsure, I will ask them questions such as who their favorite teacher was and how that teacher helped them so that I can get a better idea of what helps them learn the most.
Once I learn what their learning needs are (test-taking strategies, content knowledge, confidence, etc), I will first show them the way to do it (for example, if the student has difficulty with content knowledge, I will show them the different strategies to quickly solve the problems). During this process of showing the student the skill, I will write the information down in a step-by-step list (or a flow chart, if that suits the student best), and encourage the student to do the same. I will then have the student practice the skill with some guidance. Different ways I handle this stage of learning is having the student try to work out the problem. If they get stuck, I will remind them of the different general tips. I will also be giving the student sets of practice problems be sure to more accurately simulate the testing environment and discourage the practice of staying on one problem. I will emphasize this more prominently with students who specifically struggle with test-taking strategies (giving more some problems earlier in the problem set so that the student gets in the habit of being able to move on to the next problem).
I will also be primarily using the official CollegeBoard prep materials so that the student is practicing with the original source material. I will also assign practice for the student to do outside of the sessions so that I am able to make the most of the time during the lessons.
These lessons are primarily for high school students who are preparing to take the SAT.

Katie has been instrumental in my middle/high school daughter's success, and I don't know what she would have done without her!
Katie has been tutoring my daughter for a year, through COVID challenges and then back to in-person school time periods primarily in math, but truly whatever subject my daughter says she needs help with. (English, Social Studies, etc.).
We have found her to be reliable, helpful, flexible, and caring. She truly goes above and beyond to support my daughter because she truly cares. My daughter comes out of a tutoring sessions with Katie with a big smile on her face and exclaims how she *finally* understands it because of the way Katie explains it. She helps her understand the "why" behind the math which she currently does not get from her own teacher.
I truly cannot say enough about Katie. She has been such a gift to my daughter and we are beyond grateful for her.Katie is an amazing tutor. From the first day we met, Katie took the time to get to know my son, his learning styles, and how to best support him. Katie has been tutoring my son for a year and a half. He looks forward to their weekly sessions together. She is extremely knowledgeable with the academic content and the delivery of the lessons. My son’s confidence and grades improved since working with Katie.
