About Jemma
I am a highly experienced and passionate Head of A-level Sociology with the whole school responsibility of EPQ Centre Coordinator. In taking over the Sociology department at my School four years ago, I have turned a small, underperforming department into a thriving and high achieving one. Sociology is now a highly regarded and sought after subject at A-Level. The student uptake has steadily increased each year. This academic year has seen unprecedented numbers in the Yr. 12 uptake, resulting in Sociology now being one of the most popular A-Levels in the school.
This year my A-Level results were 89% A-*B which is a 22% rise from last year. I am proud that Sociology is now one of the highest performing A-Level departments in our sixth form. Across all three of the Sociology A-level examination papers, my Yr13 students achieved considerably higher than the national average. The number of students progressing on to study Sociology at an undergraduate level is also steadily increasing. This year 40% of my students went on to study sociology or social sciences at Higher Education citing the reason as ‘being inspired by my teaching and their developed love of the subject'.

As an outstanding classroom practitioner, I am committed to my students achieving academic excellence. I am highly driven to seeing young people succeed and this exudes in my work, teaching and manner. I teach through a personalised and individualised way, enabling students to thrive at their own pace and fully meet their individual potential. Within my role as Head of Sociology, I have confidently planned schemes of work, resources and assessments for my students within the OCR board, but I have experience of teaching AQA also. I believe that creative, relevant and innovative lessons are fundamental to student engagement. Sociology is a dynamic and vibrant disciple, and it is important that this reflected in my teaching. I have a relentless approach to improving the outcomes for my students. Meticulous planning, monitoring and evaluation of my students at an individual level is very important to my teaching approach.
