About Monica

Highly experienced working teacher/examiner, 100% grades A*-C for GCE and grades 4-9 for GCSE, with 80% of tutees consistently reaching the upper bands. All levels catered for. DBS checked. As I am qualified and experienced to teach four subjects: English literature and language, Drama/Theatre Studies, French and German, up to and including A level, I am in a position to offer students on alternate weeks tutoring in two or three subjects if required. I have been teaching at secondary and university level for 25 years, my secondary school experience ranges from state schools to prestigious independent. I am an Edexcel GCE examiner, have been widely published in modern foreign language education, exile and theatre studies and hold upper threshold status. I have lived and worked in Switzerland and France; I completed part of my first degree at Toulouse University and in Paris trained as a Berlitz EFL teacher. Although I am trained to teach at secondary level in the UK, in recent years I have had great success preparing students for 11 and 13 plus English exams, one such student won the English scholarship to attend Harrow public school.

About the lesson

Friendly, professional and dedicated. I enjoy teaching all ages and abilities and prefer to nurture long working relationships with tutees and their parents over a year or more. The majority of my current tutees are siblings whose families I have known for a number of years. Lessons via Zoom or in person are created to meet the exact requirements of the examining board the student is following and or their precise learning needs. Students with special needs and or English not as a first language, can also be catered for. Homework is given and is expected to be completed. I teach weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. In the first instance parents should email me to arrange a time to discuss how I can help their child. Testimonials, qualifications, DBS and proof of upper threshold status are available on request.

Monica is an excellent teacher extremely inspiring and motivating. She not only makes the subject she teaches interesting she also inspires her students to do well. She is kind and flexible. Both my children got grades 8 and 9 in English and French. In only 3 months my son's French grade improved from a 5 to an 8.

The first free lesson with Monica will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

Details

Before any lesson is scheduled and given I arrange a time to talk with you about your child's learning needs. The conversation via mobile or Whatsapp lasts normally 30 minutes . I request that prior to the conversation you complete a short questionnaire telling me what texts your child has studied to date and the examination board they may be following so that I can prepare for the first lesson accurately and answer any questions you may have. The first lesson lasts 1 hour and 15 mins , one hour lesson and 15 minutes introductions where I show you my teaching credentials of almost 30 years and your child shows me their most recent school work. For insurance purposes I require that you complete a short terms and conditions which covers code of conduct, 48 hour cancellation fee, missing no more than 10 lessons in any 12 month period and coursework ie I do not assist in coursework as it is not permitted. All lessons including the first have to be paid for and via bank transfer before any lesson. The additional 45 minutes I give you to prepare for the first lesson is free.
