About Heather
My approach to tutoring is student-centered, collaborative, and focused on helping students develop holistic academic skills to become more independent. With a PhD and more than 15 years of experience in higher education, I have worked across disciplines with university students ranging from undergraduates to doctoral students. I particularly emphasize thinking before writing. We identify the purpose and argument of the assignment, understand expectations, develop an effective structure, and then strengthen individual paragraphs and sentences. I show students why something works, rather than simply correcting their work for them. I also help students create customized, evidence-based plans for their unique needs that they can stick to. I work with neurodivergent students and draw on principles of UDL and inclusive pedagogy.
What sets me apart:
What distinguishes me is a combination of teaching and academic skills expertise. I have spent my career thinking about how people learn. I have designed and taught university courses and online learning resources, worked individually with students, coaching them on academic writing and learning strategies, and supported learners with diverse needs. I also work with students who are capable but struggling to translate their ideas into academic work. I know that students can struggle with unfamiliar academic conventions, ambiguous assignments, organization, time management, and confidence. I aim to make those hidden expectations visible and teach students strategies they can carry forward into their academic work.
Who I tutor:
* University and college students, from introductory through upper-year courses
* Graduate students, including students working on dissertations, research papers, literature reviews, applications, scholarships and other academic writing.
* Students in the humanities and social sciences, particularly history, gender studies, cultural studies, and English.
* Students who want support with academic writing, research, critical thinking, reading, argumentation, and essay development
* Students who are learning how to navigate university-level academic expectations
* Students who benefit from a structured, supportive, and individualized approach to learning
* English-language learners who want to strengthen their academic writing and communication
* Students who have accessibility or learning needs and would benefit from flexible approaches to learning

A typical lesson is structured around the student's immediate goals while also building longer-term skills.
1. Check-in and goal setting: Identify what the student wants to accomplish during the session. This includes things like developing an essay argument, preparing for an exam, or improving a piece of writing.
2. Diagnose the challenge: Ask about past successes. Look at existing work. Sometimes, the real roadblock is not where students expect.
3. Explain and model: Clarify the concept and use concrete examples. I often model the process for the student.
4. Guided practice: The student applies the approach themselves. I provide questions, prompts, and feedback rather than simply supplying answers.
5. Independent application and reflection: Work toward the student completing tasks independently. Identify what they have learned, what they should work on next, and strategies they can use on their own.
My goal is for students to leave a session not only having completed something, but knowing how to approach a similar problem the next time.
