I believe that learning should be both fun and structured. My teaching philosophy is that no one should ever feel stupid when they are trying their hardest to grasp a concept and learn something difficult. I also recognize that people are good at different things and it is essential not to patronize learners. I believe that anyone can learn a language (and maybe I could even learn long division—I still don’t know how) if they put their mind to it and had a good teacher. For me, both low-anxiety and high-motivation are the most intrinsic aspects of creating both a successful teaching as well as learning environment. I firmly believe that the instructor should also do their best to avoid the traditional “Atlas” model of teaching and organize the classroom in a circular fashion to diffuse teacher authority and emphasize the idea that students are both active and responsible for their own learning. Additionally, I will strive to speak in the target language at least ninety percent of the time because I believe that only through full immersion can students truly learn and gain proficiency.
