About Dr Sajjad

Hi. I have a Ph.D. in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of Essex, Colchester, UK (2000) and have 26+ years (over 9000 hours) of full-time university-level teaching experience in Electrical Engineering / IT across three universities (one in Newcastle, UK, and two abroad), including full professor for 10+ years. Additionally, I have field experience as 3G/UMTS Research Engineer with Motorola UK (Swindon). I hold a European/US granted 18-claim patent in wireless telecoms that is listed on United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) website. I have published several research articles in high impact factor journals such as the prestigious Elsevier journal, ‘Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews’ which has current impact factor of 14.9. I have supervised dozens of final year projects/ dissertations in engineering/IT plus MS theses in UK. I have excellent English communication skills in reading, writing and speaking. I scored 8.0/9.0 in IELTS. Over the decades, I have closely observed successful people and also those not so successful. I now strongly believe that a high IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is not sufficient for a successful and satisfying life, for which additionally, a high EQ (Emotional Quotient), a high SQ (Social Quotient) and a high AQ (Adversity Quotient) are also required.

  • How long have you been interested in the field of well-being and are you practicing?

I’ve been seriously interested in well-being for well over a decade, first as a curious
researcher and later as a practitioner who works with real people and real life problems.
Over time, I noticed that stress, overthinking, poor sleep, and low mood are often “quiet”
issues … people carry them silently while still functioning on the outside. Yes, I actively
practice and coach, and I keep refining my approach based on what actually helps clients
week by week, not just what sounds good in theory.
  • Tell us what your discipline can bring to people's lives.

My work helps people build a calmer inner system … so they don’t feel hijacked by worry,
mood swings, or mental noise. Practically, it can improve sleep, confidence, decisionmaking, relationships, and daily energy. But the deeper benefit is this: you start trusting
yourself again, because your mind becomes a tool, not a threat. I aim for progress that
    feels “livable,” not forced.
  • Could you provide some instant top tips to help us feel good in body and mind?

Start with the basics that work fast: drink water, take a 10–15 minute walk, and get
sunlight on your face if possible. If your mind is racing, do one simple breathing pattern:
inhale 4 seconds, hold 7, exhale 8 … repeat for 2–3 minutes. Then do a “brain dump” on
paper: write every worry down without judging it. Finally, ask one stabilizing question:
“What is the next small action I can take in the next 10 minutes?” … small actions calm
    big feelings.
  • How would you describe your method as a practitioner?

My method is practical, structured, and very human … no complicated jargon, no
preaching. I mix evidence-based coaching tools (like cognitive reframing, habit design,
and stress regulation) with a gentle, culturally sensitive approach. Sessions are not just
talk; we set a clear goal, identify what’s blocking it, and create a simple plan you can
actually follow. I also teach “self-coaching” so you don’t become dependent on sessions
    forever.
  • With experience, are there things you have learned or unlearned about yourself or others?

Yes, … one big unlearning is that people don’t need “perfect motivation,” they need the
right system and support. I’ve also learned that behind most anxiety is not weakness, but a protective mind trying too hard to keep you safe. Another lesson: kindness works faster
than harsh self-criticism (even for disciplined, high-achieving people). And honestly, I’ve
learned to respect small wins … because small wins are how real change is built.
  • Do you have a role model, a person who really inspired you?

I’m inspired by a mix of thinkers and practical teachers rather than one celebrity figure.
Dale Carnegie influenced my belief that worry can be managed through simple, daily
disciplines, and Bertrand Russell’s clarity on happiness helped me see how much peace
depends on the direction of our attention. I also admire modern life coaches Tony Robbins
and Michael Serva; and the psychology educators who translate research into everyday
language … because if an idea cannot be used, it’s not really helping.
  • How do you personally relax; what methods work for you?

For me, relaxation works best when it’s physical and simple: a walk, light stretching, and
a clean “digital cut-off” at night. I also use journaling when my mind is overloaded … just
5 minutes to empty the mental inbox. Sometimes I do quiet breathing or a short reflective
prayer/meditation, depending on the day. And yes, occasionally I relax the old-fashioned
way: tea, silence, and doing nothing on purpose.
  • Tell us about a memorable lesson

One memorable lesson was with a student who said, “My mind is my enemy.” We didn’t
fight the mind … we trained it, gently, like you train a restless child: with routines,
reassurance, and clear boundaries. After a few weeks, they told me, “The problem didn’t
disappear, but I stopped shaking inside.” That stayed with me because it’s the truth of
well-being: life won’t become perfect, but you can become steadier … strong in a calm
    way.
