About Colleen

Hello students! It's lovely to meet you. My name is Teacher Colleen, I'm a TESOL certified English tutor with 5 years experience teaching. I have played the violin and fiddle for 20 years.

I'm originally from USA but now live with my husband in UK just outside of London. I'm a graduate of the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London where I studied my BA (Hons) in Fashion Journalism. I have also studied Communications and Government at ORU in USA.

I love to read, write, dance, draw, play the violin, spend time with my family, play with my pet cats, and go traveling. I have visited 12 countries during my study abroad as a university student. I love meeting new people, trying new foods, and understanding different cultures.

Fun facts:
I also speak basic Mandarin Chinese which I've picked up throughout the years, and I really enjoy learning the language!
I have had dozens of students who keep coming back regularly for many years, where I'm able to create a bond and help them specifically with their educational needs.

About the lesson

Hi there! My name is Colleen and I’m so excited to be teaching you the fiddle or violin. Whether you’re an absolute beginner who is just learning to hold your violin, or you are an advanced player that would like to upscale and learn some new skills on the fiddle, I am really excited to help you reach your goals.

If you have a child who is interested in learning, I’ve created a 12 week absolute beginners violin course specifically for children where we focus on holding the violin, developing good posture, clapping to the beat, rhythm and listening skills. Of course if you're an absolute beginner adult, feel free to join in, too!

I like to focus on playing by ear but I do introduce the student to some musical notes in case they’d like to continue reading sheet music in the future. By the end of 12 lessons, you should be able to hold your violin and perform one of your favourite songs!

There are 3 different styles of fiddling that I can help you learn. There’s the Cape Breton style of fiddling (a little island just off the coast of Nova Scotia) which is heavily influenced by Scottish fiddling. There's Scottish and also Irish fiddling I've been playing for years as well. I can help you learn different kinds of tunes and beats like strathspeys, marches and waltzes. And then of course there’s the Irish fiddle where I can teach you reels and jigs!

I’ve had private lessons in Ireland from fiddlers like Zoe Conway - Riverdance’s star fiddler. I’ve also had lessons from Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, along with her husbands’ family (the Leahy's) where I attended their music camp in Canada and had private lessons from Doug, Angus, and Donnell Leahy.

I am also a TESOL certified English tutor, and I have taught both adults and children of all ages (I'm also a part time English tutor for 5+ years). Because I also teach English, please send me a message if there's a time slot you'd like to inquire about.

Lesson lengths are up to you - they can range from 30, 45 to 60 min. lessons. Your first 30 min. lesson is free as we’ll just be having a chat about your goals, what you’d like to achieve with the fiddle or violin, and I can assess your level and where you’re at.
