About Kayla
Hello there! I’m Kayla, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology graduate and Online Tutor with over 5 years of tutoring experience working with young learners—both neurotypical children and those with special needs! :) I'm passionate about building strong literacy foundations in early learners (Junior K to Grade 2), using methodical, evidence-based strategies tailored to each child's unique needs. Psychology-informed instruction: My academic background gives me insight into children’s learning styles, emotional regulation, and motivation—allowing me to guide young learners with empathy and care. Structured, yet playful lessons: Each session incorporates systematic phonics, scaffolded reading/writing practice, and engaging play-based learning—designed to foster both academic confidence and emotional growth. Proven clarity and reliability: I commit to prompt and clear communication, routine updates to parents, and building trust through consistent professionalism. What Makes Me Unique SEL-integrated literacy learning: I blend emotional vocabulary, regulation tools, and self-awareness into English lessons to ensure holistic development. Flexible, parent-centered approach: I conduct pre- and post-session chats with caregivers, send clear summaries, and share home reinforcement strategies to keep families actively involved. Warm, supportive teaching presence: Parents describe my style as nurturing, encouraging, and dedicated—making each lesson feel like a joyful exploration rather than a chore. My goal is to help your child become a confident reader, writer, and communicator—building skills that matter both in school and in life. I’d be delighted to support your child’s learning journey! I offer English lessons tailored for students in grades JK-Grade 2. Building strong foundations in phonics, early reading, writing, and oral language skills—all infused with social–emotional learning and creativity.
What Your Child Will Learn
Phonics mastery: We use systematic, structured phonics to build letter–sound knowledge, word family awareness (e.g. -at, -op), and sight words—to support reading and writing fluency.
Literacy essentials: Students learn to trace and write letters, practice short sentences, and express themselves using drawing and emergent writing activities.
Oral language & vocabulary: Through storytelling, songs, and discussion, children learn to use academic and emotional vocabulary—great for building confidence and comprehension.
Reading & Comprehension: We move from decoding to fluency and comprehension with supportive phrases and scaffolded discussions—using strategies comparable to reciprocal teaching adapted for young learners.
Literacy Development: Your child will practice tracing letters, writing simple sentences, and expressing thoughts through drawing or emergent writing, building foundational literacy confidence.
Multisensory & Play-Based Learning
Lessons are interactive and joyful—using games, storytelling, movement, and sensory materials. This approach is grounded in both Orton-Gillingham techniques and play-based methodology, ideal for neurodiverse & neurotypical learners alike.
I weave social-emotional learning into literacy exercises—by discussing characters’ feelings in storytime, writing emotion-related words, or responding to a poem prompt like “The Color Monster.” This builds empathy, self-awareness, and emotional vocabulary.
Developmentally aligned: Young children thrive when literacy is paired with rhythm, play, and sensory engagement.
Proven methods: Systematic phonics, phonemic awareness, and scaffolded literacy skills provide measurable gains in early reading and spelling.
Whole-child approach: Coupling academic instruction with SEL ensures readiness for classroom demands and emotional regulation, especially helpful in transition years.
Your child will learn foundational reading and writing skills—and will gain emotional understanding, speaking confidence, and the joy of learning through stories and creativity.
Would you like a sample lesson plan or to schedule a trial session? I’d love to help your young learner build both skill and self-belief!
