About Michelle

Hi there! I'm Michelle, a second-year master's student studying flute performance with Susan Milan at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, UK. Ever since I began playing the flute 14 years ago (wow!), I was immediately drawn to it and knew I wanted to keep music in my life. When I was 13, I started seriously considering music as a career and started taking private lessons shortly after. My very first flute teacher at the local music store taught me so much and was so encouraging, and my love for playing the flute kept growing. She introduced me to Taffanel and Gaubert as well as Trevor Wye, and the fundamentals of playing the flute. When I went to university, I actually studied biology and music education before settling on performance; during this time, I was still taking lessons from a fellow graduate student, who supported me in my decision to pursue a performance degree. After I switched my degree, my flute professor was nothing but kind, energetic, and supportive, and helped me grow even further. Shortly after this time, I felt it was best for me to study somewhere in the city for more opportunities, and I really wanted to study with someone who was an orchestral musician (since that's my dream job!). When I broke this news to my then-professor, she still supported my decision and helped me through my audition process. My audition was successful and I was accepted into the new university, where I completed my bachelor's degree. My flute teacher at this university pushed me to be not only the best flutist, but the best musician I was capable of. Her expertise from playing in a professional orchestra helped shape who I am today. I like to tell others about my previous teachers because I hope to be as inspiring as they were to me, and I recognize how influential they are to a student's life! I aspire to be that for my students too.

About the lesson

I've been playing the flute for 14 years, and I would not be where I am today without the wonderful teachers who guided me and pushed me to be the best musician I could be. That is why I've been inspired to teach and hopefully pass on those same skills to my students. And as someone with an international education, I've developed a diverse skill set in teaching and performing! I am open to teaching anyone who wants to learn flute, from beginners up to intermediate/advanced level students. While I mainly study and teach classical music, I also have experience playing in other genres and highly support students who want to learn pop, film, jazz, or contemporary music. I aim to tailor my lessons to the student's personal goals and interests!
