About Nancy
Teaching piano is an evolving and deeply personal process that requires empathy, creativity, and an understanding of each student’s unique needs and musical goals. I strive to cultivate an encouraging atmosphere where students feel free to explore and express themselves while building a solid technical base. My lessons focus on developing essential skills like hand coordination, finger dexterity, rhythmic accuracy, and sight-reading, but I also prioritize musical interpretation, teaching students to convey emotion and character through phrasing, dynamics, and articulation. I integrate ear training and improvisation early to build musical intuition and creativity, allowing students to connect more deeply with their repertoire. I work with students across all ages and skill levels, tailoring lessons to individual preferences and aspirations—whether preparing for exams, recitals, or simply playing for enjoyment. One highlight was supporting a student who initially lacked confidence and struggled with complex rhythms; through patient guidance and personalized strategies, they gained mastery and performed confidently in a community recital. I emphasize practical practice strategies that fit each student’s lifestyle and promote consistent progress without burnout. Technology is a helpful tool in my teaching, and I often use recordings and apps for feedback and supplementary practice. Above all, my goal is to inspire a lifelong passion for piano, empowering students to express themselves fully and confidently through music.

I believe that piano lessons should be a holistic experience that fosters technical proficiency, musical understanding, and personal expression in an encouraging and dynamic environment.
I begin by establishing a firm technical base, emphasizing finger independence, proper posture, hand coordination, rhythm, and sight-reading skills. These essentials are woven into diverse, interesting repertoire that aligns with the student’s musical preferences and goals—from classical masterpieces to jazz improvisations, pop songs, and original compositions. I incorporate music theory and ear training consistently, making abstract concepts practical and relevant.
Improvisation and composition are encouraged to cultivate creativity and help students find their unique voice. Technology such as recording tools, metronomes, and practice apps support lesson engagement and progress tracking. I prioritize creating a positive and supportive environment where students feel safe to experiment, make mistakes, and grow. Whether preparing for recitals, exams, or personal exploration, my mission is to guide students in becoming confident, expressive pianists with a lifelong love of music.
