About Asami

I am a Japanese–English bilingual tutor and academic specialist with over 15 years of teaching experience and two MA degrees: an MA in Creative and Critical Writing from the University of Sussex and an MA in English Literature, Language and Culture from Ochanomizu University. I have taught at the University of Sussex and on the MA Translation programme at London Metropolitan University, bringing the intellectual rigour and scholarly discipline of advanced literary and linguistic study into highly focused one-to-one tuition. I have also worked as a GCSE examiner, giving me precise insight into assessment criteria and how to guide students towards accurate, confident, and high-level performance.

Alongside my academic appointments, I have worked professionally as a conference interpreter, translator, and subtitler. I also develop examination materials for UK governmental organisations, contributing to high-stakes language assessment and testing. This combination of scholarship, assessment expertise, and professional practice enables me to support advanced bilingual students in refining nuance, register, stylistic control, and cross-cultural expression across both languages.

I have worked with high-achieving students from schools including Brighton College and Lancing College, supporting successful progression to universities such as the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds, as well as to universities in Japan. I am experienced in preparing students for demanding academic pathways and selective university entry.

I support learners with goals including GCSE, A-level, and JLPT preparation, entry to Japanese degree programmes, university-level study, and professional or academic relocation to Japan. My teaching is particularly suited to motivated students seeking academic depth, precision of expression, and intellectual independence.

With a foundation in both literary study and creative writing, I encourage careful analysis, structured thinking, and confident expression. I support students who are aiming to strengthen their academic skills while developing their own independent voice.

About the lesson

My Japanese lessons are structured, student-centred, and carefully tailored to individual goals. With over 15 years of teaching experience, I design sessions that are intellectually rigorous yet engaging, adapted to your learning style, and focused on building clarity, confidence, and measurable progress.

The first lesson is a free 30-minute consultation, during which we discuss your objectives, assess your current level, and identify the most effective materials and strategy for your development. Following this consultation, I provide a written document outlining your learner profile, a brief diagnostic analysis, and a proposed study plan to support your progress in a structured and transparent way.

Ongoing lessons are purposeful and well-structured, and include conversation practice, close reading, written work, translation, and preparation for GCSE, A-level, and JLPT examinations.

I also provide professional and executive language coaching for learners requiring targeted preparation for university study, academic writing, business communication, or relocation to Japan. I also offer 2 to 1 lesson for couples who are planning to go to Japan for holiday.

I work with motivated learners at all stages, from beginners establishing strong foundations to advanced and specialist students aiming for university-level fluency and academic precision.
