About Alpheus (Ali)
I taught geography at a large state-school and after exams were done in the summer term, I gave out a map of Asia and taught basic Korean, Japanese and Chinese. The pupils were then able to read place names on these maps with nothing but Asian scripts. This was fun. One pupil then asked me if I would teach him Japanese for the GCSE (I had a postgraduate degree in Japanese). I said I would if he got a nice group together and they were able to give up two lunch breaks a week for the classes (as I was coaching rowing after school every day). It was fantastic fun to teach and I ended up doing it for five years! All pupils who took the GCSE got A's or A*. One pupil went on to get his A at AS level. One boy ended up moving out to Japan after university and getting married to a lovely Japanese woman he met there. We all enjoyed the process. I would love to teach more people this fun language.
Go, I taught several maths teachers to play this wonderful game (based on a 19 x 19 grid and is a game of shapes, territory, not being too greedy, planning and maintaining attention). They then ran a Go club for the school. I was busy running the rowing program. I learned to play the game properly in a small town in Japan and would love to take it further and help others learn how to play, if they are interested.
