About James

I hold an MFA, BA, PGD, and several Certificates and Diplomas from Cambridge University (The British and European Studies Group), Kenyon College, Brunswick School, Drama Studio London, and CSULA. I have been teaching for 20 years, and I have taught hundreds of students at CSULA, Greenwich Education Group, The Collaborative Center for Learning & Development, Brunswick School, The Grace Organization, The GO Project, North Street School, The New School, Tokeneke School, Dolan Middle School, Camp Dudley, New Hope Lutheran Day School, and Curtain Call.

About the lesson

I believe that in order to learn, students need an environment that feels supportive enough to build confidence, safe enough to take risks, stimulating enough to be fun, and challenged enough to step out of their comfort zone to strive for excellence. If students feel ownership in the curriculum, centered around student interests, they are motivated to work harder.
Since I began teaching at the age of sixteen, thirty years ago, I have gathered extensive firsthand experience that each student is an individual who thinks and communicates differently. Fortunately as an actor, I have the sensitivity and flexibility to alter my style and language to reach and inspire each student differently.
Regarding pedagogy, I can flexibly adapt that of the student, school, or department. As an MFA student and as a teacher in my Teacher Training course, I studied and practiced Stephen Wangh's Socratic Inquiry-Based Learning, Project-Based Learning, and Collaborative Learning.
I have an enthusiastic curiosity and love of learning that inspires students. I use passion and humor to motivate students to share their ideas and explore their thoughts. To fend off the self-consciousness that can otherwise paralyze young people, I also stress the importance of being silly and not taking oneself too seriously.
My teaching philosophy can best be summarized by author and teacher Stephen Wangh in The Heart of Teaching: "The central purpose of education is… to help our students become their own teachers… A teacher's first task is to reawaken a student's dormant capacity for pure discovery … to not only give a person permission to discover moment-by-moment awareness … to create a climate in which that person can give herself that permission."
