About Michael

I've spent a lot of my life learning languages by travelling to and living in the countries that speak them - I learned Japanese in Japan, French in France, and German in Austria! I've always tried to come up with new and interesting ways to make language learning feel natural and enjoyable.

I became obsessed with Japanese culture back when I was in high school watching anime like Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist. I was singing along with the theme songs and picked up a lot of Japanese phrases just by listening. I became the go-to for help in my Japanese class at school and made a lot of friends in Japan - and so I had the crazy idea to turn my hobby into my career. I had so much fun during my exchange semester in Tokyo - I know what it's like to study and live in Japan and I'd love to tell you what I know (like how FamilyMart is actually better than 7-11!).

Becoming a language teacher was the best decision I made to be able to share my love of languages with others. The best lessons I've had are one-to-one tutoring sessions where we get to tailor-make lessons to be about exactly what the learner wants and I can tell stories about my experiences in Japan. These are my favourites because I get to learn a lot too!

Language learning is fun for a lifetime, and I hope you'll get to understand that the way I do.

About the lesson

The most important part of learning a language is motivation, and that's why we're going to create your lessons together based on your goals. The idea is that each lesson will always teach you Japanese that you actually want to learn and will get you fluent for travel in Japan, making friends, or even just watching anime!

However! I won't just teach you Japanese - I'll teach you to learn Japanese yourself. I'll teach you how to make Japanese such a part of your routine you'll barely notice you're learning every day! Your favourite things about Japan - movies, shows, karaoke, video games or anything else - can become your very own study resources. I may not be a native speaker, but that means I really understand what it’s like to learn Japanese, and I know how to make it fun!

Over my 9 years of teaching, I've used this fun and effective method in classrooms and in one-to-one sessions in Japan, Austria, Australia, and (now!) the UK for learning any language. We can use as much or as little of your native language as you like - tell me what you'd like and we'll make it happen.
