About Paul

I’m Paul Smith, a professional graphic designer with over 25 years of experience and a deep love for visual communication. I run my own design business, specialise in vector graphics, and have taught Adobe Illustrator to beginners and professionals alike; both one-to-one and in classroom settings.

Teaching is something I truly enjoy. I’ve always believed that creativity should be empowering, not intimidating, and that anyone can learn to master the tools of great design. Whether you're brand new to Illustrator or looking to refine your skills, I’m here to help you grow your confidence and take your creative work to the next level.

About the lesson

My lessons are practical, engaging, and tailored to your individual goals. Whether you're a beginner learning the basics or a business owner wanting to create your own marketing assets, I’ll guide you step-by-step in a clear and encouraging way.

Lessons are structured around hands-on projects that make the learning stick. You’ll learn professional workflows, smart shortcuts, and how to think like a designer – not just how to click the right buttons. I share real-world tips from my career, and I make sure every session leaves you with skills you can use straight away.

You'll also get custom Illustrator files to practise with between sessions, and I’m always happy to adapt the pace to suit your style of learning. My goal is simple: to help you become confident, independent, and creatively empowered in Adobe Illustrator.

Deadly! Here is a heartfelt review you can use for the Superprof platform:

I had the absolute pleasure and privilege of learning graphic design with Paul, and I honestly can’t recommend him highly enough. From the very first session, it was clear that Paul is a master of his craft – incredibly knowledgeable, especially when it comes to Illustrator, and able to break down complex processes into simple, step-by-step guidance that makes everything feel accessible. His teaching style made me feel supported at every stage, and I was genuinely surprised at how quickly I progressed.

Paul doesn’t just teach you how to use tools – he teaches you how to think like a designer. Without even realising it, I was absorbing core design principles, understanding composition, and developing a much deeper appreciation of the design process. What really sets Paul apart is his ability to weave in the philosophical and historical aspects of design. He’s incredibly well-versed in art history and brings so much depth and richness to every lesson.

On top of all that, he’s simply a brilliant person to work with. Friendly, personable, thoughtful – someone who clearly cares about helping his students grow and discover their own creative voice. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone looking to explore the deeper meaning behind design, Paul is the kind of tutor who will guide and inspire you. I’m so grateful for the experience.

Learning something new—especially mid-career—can feel overwhelming, but with Paul, it has felt like rediscovering a sense of play and curiosity I hadn’t tapped into for years.

He’s not just teaching me the real AI—Adobe Illustrator—he’s helping me see in a new way.

Paul explains things with calm, patience, and practical insight. There’s a quiet artistry to the way he teaches that makes even complex tools feel intuitive. At one point, I even said out loud: “I never thought I’d feel like a child again”—and I meant it in the best possible way.

He’s one of those rare people who meets you where you are, encourages without pressure, and helps you fall in love with learning again.

If you’re looking for someone who blends real-world design mastery with a thoughtful, inspiring teaching style, Paul’s the one.

I have worked with Paul for several years in the web development area. While I did the development, he was the brain behind the design and illustrations, which was what brought our projects to life. Paul is an extraordinary illustrator both on and offline and has already proven his capabilities as a tutor by teaching Adobe Illustrator at the SAE institute in Amsterdam. He has come so much further than that now and owes it to the world to share his talent to eager learners.

Paul rose up from being a star student to one of the best Illustrator instructors we’ve ever had. He’s not only technically gifted, he also has that rare ability to put students at ease and ensure they have fun while they are learning. It would be hard indeed to find a better tutor than Paul.
