About Paul
PLACEHOLDER BIO:
I hold a PhD (from the University of Durham), MA and BA (first class) in Philosophy and taught or tutored a range of philosophical subjects (Logic, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, Ethics & Values and Knowledge & Reality) whilst studying for my doctorate. I tutored across the spectrum of philosophical subjects from the second year of my PhD but, given the ground-breaking nature of my research, I was also invited to lecture on my supervisor’s (the internationally acclaimed philosopher, E. J. Lowe) Philosophy of Mind classes.
During my time at Durham I also taught Critical Thinking to local secondary school students as part of the University’s widening participation programme. This was a highly enjoyable experience, as it involved engaging local, gifted and talented students with challenging subjects that should be but are not often taught within the UK curriculum. In addition to this, given the nature of the north-east of England as a more economically deprived area, it was very rewarding to be given the opportunity to widen the horizons of often very able students, who might not otherwise be open to either philosophical thought or the possibility of future university study.
Whilst studying for my MA in Philosophy, I also worked part time as an Academic Support Worker for students with special educational needs. I assisted students on psychology, business, maths and engineering degrees, attending lectures and classes with students, taking notes and explaining more complex ideas as required (with very basic sign language). This was very rewarding work, as it involved ensuring that my students we able to fully engage with their courses and reach their full potential.
Throughout my postgraduate study I have tutored, taught and have also presented my research at conferences across Europe – occasionally winning prizes for my work. In addition to this I also tutored at undergraduate level, where as a final year student, given my ability in Formal Logic, I was asked to help first year undergraduates (often from arts and humanities backgrounds), who were finding such an analytical, quasi-numerate subject incredibly difficult.
Whilst my current position in the nuclear industry involves more scientific, technical writing, almost all of my previous employment has required a great deal of communicative and presentational experience. For example, whilst running my own mountain guiding business, I regularly led mixed groups with minimal experience in extreme mountain conditions. In addition to this, I regularly taught outdoor education classes to local primary schools.
I have then taught and tutored throughout my academic (and my employment) career and this has been the most enjoyable and rewarding work that I have done. Given my background, skills and experience, I would most welcome the opportunity to teach Theory of knowledge (TOK) or critical thinking as part of the Baccalaureate programme. I would also be happy to teach more widely, English as a foreign language or general, philosophical subjects (ethics or moral philosophy within general studies) for example, should such possibilities arise. To this end I am currently studying an online TEFL course, with a view to being a more rounded EFL teacher.
[Outside: nuclear, mountaineering etc...]
I have a wide range of academic, employment and personal experience that enables me to create engaging and stimulating lessons, allowing students to flourish and reach their goals.
