I prepare every class individually and I always pay attention to the personal needs and objectives of my students. From my prior experience in teaching languages, I have learned how important it is to take one step at a time and sometimes even take a step back and repeat things. My motto is that there are no stupid questions and during my classes I always encourage my students to ask me everything they did not understand. My lessons cover German vocabulary, grammar, helpful expressions, songs, interesting facts about Germany and its culture and even a Bavarian crash course for anyone planning to visit the Oktoberfest!

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I grew up speaking German. My family moved from central Germany to the south when I was little, so I was exposed to different dialects. This allows me to cover various aspects of German culture from different regions. For instance, I can help you with Bavarian slang for your Oktoberfest visit or teach you useful phrases for navigating a traditional Christmas market, ensuring you have an immersive and enjoyable experience.
  • Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

An emblematic representative of the German language and culture is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. As a prolific writer, poet, and statesman, Goethe's works, such as "Faust," have had a profound impact on German literature and culture. His contributions to literature and philosophy embody the intellectual spirit and cultural depth of the German-speaking world.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or expression in the language that you particularly like?

I particularly like the word "Gemütlichkeit." It’s a concept that embodies a sense of coziness, warmth, and comfort, often associated with social gatherings and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Nowadays, I think it is really important to learn about other cultures to contribute to cultural understanding between different countries. Speaking a language is an essential part of this, as it opens the gate to a new culture and enables better communication and mutual understanding. On a more personal level, it is incredibly rewarding to discover a new country while traveling, and you can make so much more of your trip when you know how to get around and communicate with locals.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

In my opinion, the main difficulty for English native speakers learning German is the grammar, particularly the cases and verb conjugation. English speakers are not usually familiar with these concepts, and it takes some effort to understand them. However, once you master these difficulties, the language becomes much easier. In my lessons, I take a step-by-step approach and always encourage my students to speak, even if they don't get every grammatical point 100% correct yet. Practice and gradual learning are key to overcoming these challenges.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

During my exchange to Taiwan to learn Chinese, I experienced firsthand how crucial understanding a language is. In the beginning, I knew very little Chinese and felt almost illiterate, unable to read signs or menus and struggling with basic conversations. This experience gave me a profound appreciation for the challenges faced by language learners and reinforced the importance of patience and persistence. It not only enhanced my own language skills but also made me a more empathetic and effective language teacher.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I started teaching German during a trip to Australia on a study exchange. This experience was incredibly enriching, as it allowed me to see how German is taught and perceived in a different cultural context. Since then, I have constantly improved my lesson content and adapted the materials to different language-speaking proficiencies. Additionally, interacting with students from various backgrounds has given me new insights and approaches to teaching German effectively.
