Languages are one of the few subjects that can be almost completely self-taught but that doesn't make them easy to learn and they aren’t built equal. Some are far easier than others. Latin is the “original” romance language and is the root of many European languages. English has been directly and indirectly influenced by Latin, English is a Germanic language but due to historical reasons, it has been influenced heavily by the French romance language. That’s why quite a few words, verbs and even constructions may seem oddly familiar. However, don’t think that this means that Latin is easy to learn for English to learn. French, Spanish and other widely spoken languages benefit from a lot of diversity in learning materials ensuring that every learner can find a creator or source that suits them. Latin is a little less diverse and more specialised. Latin is often seen as exclusive, academic or even stuffy but it is more accessible than most people think!
Number one you have to choose what kind of Latin you want to learn and this will line up with your goals. If you simply want to learn Latin for the fun of it, or you want to read books and texts in the original form, then classical Latin may be the right choice for you. Classical Latin was spoken by the late Roman Republic and throughout the Roman Empire. Most of your famous Roman philosophers and orators would have spoken of this type. However, there is also old Latin, Vulgar Latin, Medieval Latin and a few others. Once you choose what Latin you want to learn, improving becomes much more straightforward. You know what alphabet you’ll be using, the rough pronunciations and finally you can find era-specific resources! Most books and classes focus on Classical Latin. This doesn’t really answer the question though, the most reliable method for becoming better at Latin is by taking Latin lessons or by studying with a Latin tutor.
Latin tutors can provide classes that breathe life back into the “dead” language. Latin in a private tutoring session can have a very different feeling than the traditional Latin classes in Universities or schools. Once you have an enthusiastic, passionate teacher you’ll see that Latin is like any other language. It broadens the mind, unlocks new expressions, new possibilities and all in all a Latin tutor can make Latin fun again! However, it isn’t just about enjoying Latin, Latin classes are also very effective. Tutors can improve and even build from the ground up the confidence of a student, a lot simply need individual attention when learning a new language. Challenges can be disparaging, pronunciation can be frustrating and grammar can be a mess. A tutor helps with all these problems and can work much more flexibly than any traditional tutor could. A tutor, in summary, can help a student thrive when it comes to Latin but they can also help them look at the language in a whole new light!
Superprof takes a hands-off approach when it comes to orchestrating Latin lessons. One of the strongest benefits that a tutor has is their ability or freedom to conduct their lessons how they like. This creates a market that caters for any possible student as there is an equally diverse collection of tutors. However, Superprof makes it easy to find the kind of lessons you want, there are many filters such as price, location and even reviews. So, once you search up Latin, online on Superprof, you’ll be shown a list of every tutor on our platform who teaches Latin. Don’t be overwhelmed as there are many tools available to pick out the tutors who are perfect for your needs!
Many of our Latin tutors offer the first one-hour lesson for free to ensure you are happy with their methods and style of teaching. This is just the first benefit, secondly, many tutors offer packages so that you can commit to a group of lessons but as a result, their total cost is lower than otherwise! However, the hourly rate of our tutors is entirely up to the tutor, they charge whatever they think is fair, this means that you can find really good deals on Superprof but some may be more expensive than you may think. The cheapest is €15 for online 1-hour lessons.

Vladya was great. My teen can really push lessons in the direction she wants, and Vladya was both willing to let her and explore linguistics together and to get her back to Latin. Which is just what we want since our teen is learning Latin for fun...
