Portuguese may have more of a presence than most people may realise. In fact, the embassy of Portugal in Ireland reports that Portuguese is the fifth most spoken language in the world (this includes all speakers, not just natives). As it stands, five countries have Portuguese as an official language and are spoken in many more countries. Portuguese is also the basis for many creole languages and is a unifying factor between many communities and countries. This is just some of the cultural background you may learn in Portuguese lessons. However, a large deciding factor in whether Portuguese lessons are a good idea for you is the fact that the amount of Portuguese speakers in Ireland is heavily increasing. In 2006, there were roughly 4,000 Brazilian Nationals, in 2016 that number has risen to 13,640 according to the census. If you’re based in Dublin or any of the hotspots in Ireland you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practise what you’ve learned in your Portuguese lessons!
Portugal is a country that has influenced the path of the entire world. Some of the most famous explorers in the Age of exploration originated from Portugal and many of the events that would lead to a more connected world were pioneered by Portugal. Magellan who first circumnavigated the world was a Portuguese explorer (yes he was sponsored by Spain) but there was also Barolomeu DIas and Vasco de Gama which many students in Ireland would recognise as they feature very prominently in Junior Cert history! Portugal's legacy is a world-spanning trade empire that led to the creation of Brazil and many other influential cities and locations.
Portuguese lessons are affordable sessions that differ slightly from tutor to tutor but generally, you can expect lessons to range from €10 to €30. There are many factors that influence the cost of a lesson but it is important to note that a tutor sets the price and so even if a lesson is cheap, that won’t necessarily reflect the quality! But don’t worry, there are many ways to determine if a tutor provides the right Portuguese lessons for you. Some of these factors include but are not limited to; the level of Portuguese lessons wanted, for example, university-level speakers for an advanced learner will be more expensive, the qualifications of the tutor can also influence the price, taking in-person lessons can also raise the price for travelling expenses and the extra time commitment. Another factor may be that you’re asking for exam lessons or high-intensity revision lessons which will inevitably cost a little extra. However, Superprof will allow you to find a wide range of prices from all the tutors in all of Ireland!
It is absolutely worth taking Portuguese lessons as it is never a bad idea to learn a new language. Learning any new language or skill expands the brain and has been shown to increase intelligence, memory and even happiness. Learning a new skill at its most fundamental level can also allow someone to communicate with more people. Yes, there aren’t a ton of people in Ireland who can only speak Portuguese but Portugal is a very popular tourist destination with great food, people, beaches and history and what is better than being able to speak the local language in a foreign language? People will always appreciate it when you make an effort. If you’re sitting the Portuguese Leaving Cert then grinds are almost a necessity as not many secondary schools even teach the language. So, if you want to be able to communicate effectively and formally, lessons will be required.
This is the easiest part of finding a teacher believe it or not. Superprof is designed around the simple principle that it should be easy to find a teacher. Therefore, with just a few clicks and a bit of typing you’ll be able to find Portuguese lessons across the country or specifically near you. From there, you can sort by price, reviews, qualifications, focus, secondary school, university etc. There are so many options presented in a clear and digestible way that makes finding a Portuguese teacher trivial. Boa sorte!
