About Lily
I’ve never had a completely linear career, and I think that is something I really value about my journey. I started my career working in tech, before moving into a role where I get to use my languages on a regular basis and I absolutely love it. My career has shown me that the skills you develop along the way can open up opportunities you might never have expected, and that learning a language can be about so much more than simply passing an exam.
Most importantly, I want to help people feel confident using languages. I know that speaking another language can sometimes feel intimidating, particularly when you’re worried about making mistakes or not being ‘good enough’. My aim is to create a relaxed and encouraging space where you can build that confidence, make mistakes without feeling embarrassed and gradually start to feel comfortable expressing yourself in French.
I hope my own journey can inspire students to see language learning as something that can genuinely become part of their everyday life, rather than something that ends when you finish an exam. You never know where a language might take you.

I believe that languages can be learnt and taught in many different ways, and that there is no single teaching method that will work perfectly for every student. Everyone learns differently, so I like to take the time to understand what my student wants to achieve and adapt each online lesson around their individual needs, interests and learning style.
My online lessons are structured but flexible. At the beginning, I like to understand what the student would like to get out of the session, whether that is improving their confidence when speaking, developing their vocabulary, working on pronunciation, understanding French grammar, preparing for an exam, or simply becoming more comfortable having conversations in French. I then tailor the session around those goals, making sure that there is a good balance between learning something new, practising what we have covered and having the opportunity to speak French.
As lessons take place online, I like to make them as interactive and engaging as possible. I use a mixture of conversation, vocabulary exercises, pronunciation practice, grammar explanations, questions and activities that we can work through together. I particularly enjoy encouraging students to speak as much French as possible during our sessions, as I believe that building confidence is just as important as learning the rules of the language. Making mistakes is a completely natural part of learning, so I want my students to feel comfortable trying new words and phrases without worrying about getting everything perfect.
My own experience with French extends beyond studying the language at school. I studied French at both GCSE and A-Level and, although I went on to study Geography at university rather than French, I continued to develop my French alongside my degree by using my spare university credits to take additional French modules. I also spend my summers in France, where I have the opportunity to speak French regularly and immerse myself in the language and culture. French is also a part of my professional life, as my current job involves speaking and working in French. This has allowed me to develop both my academic knowledge of the language and my confidence using French naturally in everyday and professional situations.
I also like to incorporate my students' own interests into online lessons wherever possible. For example, we could discuss our favourite TV shows or films in French, using something they already enjoy as a way to practise conversation, introduce new vocabulary and learn how French speakers might naturally express themselves. I might also set a simple task such as watching a film or programme with French subtitles and choosing five new words or phrases to bring to our next session. We can then discuss what they mean, how they are used and practise putting them into our own sentences. I find that connecting language learning to everyday interests makes it more enjoyable and helps new vocabulary stick.
The length of each online lesson can also be adapted to the student. A typical lesson would be around 45–60 minutes, but I am happy to offer shorter or longer sessions depending on what works best for the individual. For younger learners or beginners, shorter and more focused sessions may be more suitable, while more advanced students may enjoy longer sessions with more time dedicated to conversation and discussion.
I also like to make learning French fun, rather than making every session feel like formal study. One thing I can guarantee is a game of ‘Le Mot’ (French Wordle) at the end of the session! It is a fun way for us to discover and practise new vocabulary together, while giving us a chance to finish the lesson with something light and interactive.
My online lessons are suitable for all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to more advanced French speakers. Whether you are learning French for school, exams, work, travel, personal interest or simply because you love the language, I aim to make every session useful, enjoyable and tailored specifically to you. Languages have no bounds, and I believe everyone should be able to learn at their own pace and in a way that works for them.
