About E David Klonsky PHD
I’ve been drawn to competitive sport my whole life — first as a high-school basketball captain and competitive karateka. What always fascinated me was the mental game: how preparation, composure, and strategy could me, or my team, outperform opponents who were stronger or faster. That is what pulled me deeper into combat sports. I view combat sports as the purest test of mental and physical performance under pressure. Today, I am a psychology professor and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with additional experience in karate, MMA, and kickboxing. My work combines deep psychological expertise with respect for and knowledge of the fight world. I help athletes not only perform under pressure, but also work through obstacles — sometimes internal, sometimes external — so that they can better fight, train, and live. While my full-time job as professor and my role as a parent leave me with little free time, I have nevertheless over the years found ways to continually engage with the combat sports world. I have made appearances on The Fight Network and The Sports Network (TSN), provided sports psych consulting for MMA, BJJ, and kickboxing competitors, cornered MMA and BJJ athletes, provided analysis for Battlefield Fight League, written guest articles for MMASucka.com and other MMA websites, and appeared on various MMA and combat sports podcasts.

For over 20 years, I’ve lived at the intersection of psychology and combat sports. As a psychology professor, I bring deep expertise in the science of emotion, behaviour, and performance. As a long-time martial arts student (BJJ brown belt; former karateka) with competition experience in karate, MMA, and jiu-jitsu — and as an occasional combat sports analyst (Fight Network, TSN), coach, and cornerman — I understand the realities of combat sports training and competition.
This dual background gives me a unique edge in helping combat athletes overcome mental blocks, sharpen focus, build confidence, train better, and perform at their best when it matters most. I've worked with athletes across the regional scene, including champions in MMA, jiu-jitsu, and kickboxing. I know that no two fighters are the same, and neither are their mental needs.
Our first session is free. We’ll have an honest conversation about your goals, strengths, and challenges, and determine whether I’m the right fit. Subsequent sessions are typically 45–60 minutes and can take place over Zoom or in person.
Above all, my approach is practical, flexible, and rooted in respect — for the sport, and for you as an athlete.
(If finances are an issue, as they often are in combat sports, I sometimes have availabilities for low/no-cost sessions.)
