About Kyra
Writer, Educator, and Creative Mentor.
I’m so glad you’re here. My journey with words started right here in the heart of the city at Columbia College Chicago, where I earned both my BA and my MFA in Creative Writing. Writing isn't just part of my career path—it’s how I navigate the world, and I’m incredibly passionate about sharing that spark with the next generation of thinkers and creators.
One of my favorite ways to bridge the gap between "school work" and the "real world" is through music. I’m a huge fan of all genres, and I love bringing age-appropriate lyrics into our sessions. Whether we’re deconstructing rhyme schemes in a pop hit or analyzing the narrative arc of a folk song, I find that connecting ELA skills to a student’s favorite playlist makes the "aha!" moment happen so much faster.
When I’m not immersed in a book (I’m an avid reader, naturally!), you can usually find me making the most of my beautiful city:
The Sunny Days: I love long walks and soaking up the sun.
The Chilly Months: You’ll find me ducking into Chicago’s world-class museums to find fresh inspiration.
At Home: I’m a proud pet parent to both a cat and a dog, who often make "guest appearances" behind the scenes during my prep time!
️ Why I Teach
Teaching is truly my PASSION. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a young learner’s confidence bloom as they realize they can tackle that difficult essay or finish that daunting book. My goal is to be the mentor I, myself, was incredibly lucky to have in school growing up—someone who sees the student as a whole person and helps them grow into a powerful communicator.

Hi there! I’m Kyra and I'm a Columbia College Chicago graduate with both a BA and an MFA in Creative Writing. As a current K-12 Teaching Residency class of 2027 candidate, I bring a unique blend of high-level academic mastery and a down-to-earth, student-first coaching style.
I believe that every student has a unique voice—sometimes they just need the right "editor" to help them find it!
What Sets My Tutoring Apart?
I’m not just a "tutor" who checks homework; I’m a mentor too. While many can fix a typo, I teach the art of communication.
The MFA Advantage: I bring master-level insights into narrative, structure, and clarity that go far beyond standard textbooks.
Modern Pedagogy: My residency training means I’m up-to-date on the latest, most effective and equitable ways to reach young learners.
The "Cool" Factor: I’m a writer and a creative who actually loves this stuff—and that enthusiasm is contagious!
My "Interest-First" Teaching Method
I come with a holistic approach. I’ve found that the fastest way to master a "boring" grammar rule is to apply it to something a student actually likes!
The Secret Sauce: Whether your student is obsessed with Minecraft, Taylor Swift, or sports, I weave those interests into our ELA drills. By connecting complex concepts to their world, the lessons "stick" and the dread of English class disappears.
A Sneak Peek: A Typical 60-Minute Lesson
We move fast and keep it engaging so the hour flies by:
The Creative Warm-Up (10 min): A fun, "no-stress" prompt to get the gears turning and build confidence.
The Core Skill (25 min): Deep-diving into a specific goal—like mastering the "Thesis Statement" or deconstructing a difficult chapter.
The Workshop (15 min): We roll up our sleeves and work on their current school assignments together, applying our new skills in real-time.
The Victory Lap (10 min): A quick recap of what we conquered and a clear, encouraging game plan for the week ahead.
Who I Work With
I am a specialist in guiding High Schoolers through the high-stakes world of college prep (AP exams, admissions essays, and honors lit), but my heart is also in building strong foundations for Middle and Elementary students. No matter the grade, I meet my students exactly where they are.
I am ready and excited to help your student shine! Let's chat about your student's specific goals?
