About Nicky
I have a multi-disciplinary background spanning Anthropology, English, Biology, and Environmental Studies, all of which require various forms of writing (grants, theses, science communication). My undergraduate degree is in Biology and Environmental Studies from Amherst College (Massachusetts, USA) and my master's degree (MSc) is in Biological and Environmental Sciences with a Science Writing and Rhetoric Certificate at the University of Rhode Island. My time in Canada began in 2019 on a research Fulbright to study and communicate marine policy. My position involved lots of writing, data analysis, and connecting with other researchers and communities to expose the social and ecological issues associated with sea otters in the Central Coast and Haida region. Then I worked as a teaching assistant for several undergraduate courses in the U.S. while working on marine policy and writing in Indonesia. My path is a career making science accessible via science communication, so I have a lot of experience with writing and editing across a range of formats and difficulty.

I base my classes on the individual learner! I like to get to know the student's objectives for their lessons and style before I start to construct my lessons. With my K-12 students, there exists a large range of comprehension. Some are visual, others are experiential, and still some absorb the information best when I speak directly to them. Especially with creative writing and literature, it is important to allow the individual space to construct their own narrative. This is why for writing lessons, I like students to provide me with rough drafts before I start teaching; I don't want to squelch someone's creativity by telling them how they should write! Rather, I take what they have written and I show them ways to get sentences or paragraphs to better connect or how they can strengthen their argument's thesis. I've found that this approach provides each student with the best chance to find a strong voice in their papers. I create all of my own lesson plans that are writing, reading-comprehension, and grammar-based. Once the student has established their learning level and interests, we may do themed lessons where the student has a voice in deciding what articles/books we read. My Biology/Environmental Studies degree is from a liberal arts college called Amherst College in the United States. With a liberal arts education, I took many other classes in anthropology and English, so if the help needed spans multiple disciplines I will be able to lend a hand with other homework or studying as needed. I look forward to working with you on any writing-intensive subject!

I worked with Nicky for about 3 semesters on a variety of subjects. She was an excellent tutor. Always organized, planned ahead and very knowledgeable and patient. My work improved significantly while working with her. I would highly recommend her.
Nicky is my twin sister whom I have lived with for 20 years! Every day she is teaching me something new and I have learned an immense amount of information from her. Nicky doesn't stop educating until she knows that you fully understand the concept. I trust her knowledge and teaching because of her impressive educational background. Whenever I need help with a paper I'm writing or understanding a reading that I have to do, Nicky is always able to clarify. She is amazing at identifying and correcting grammatical issues and sentence structure problems. She is enthusiastic about teaching and motivated to help others learn. I recommend Nicky to any Superprof member looking to improve their writing.
