About Alexis

I am currently a medical student at the University of St Andrews. I began tutoring in maths five years ago and have since tutored students both individually and in groups between the ages of 9-16. Furthermore, I have taught classes and given workshops in writing and analyzing, and have mentored students through Science Fair projects including biology and chemistry centred ideas (two of whom went on to win environmental awards at the fair), as well as standardized tests and medical school applications. Each of my students have achieved their goals, and perhaps most importantly, have learned where to look for help or how to tackle new concepts they may not understand by the end of our sessions together.

About the lesson

My lessons tend to centre around a method of questioning and attempting to explain each concept in multiple ways. In order to learn, one must revisit topics frequently and be forced to think about concepts in different ways (such as changing the context of a question or applying the answer to a follow up question). When applicable, it is helpful to aid students in being able to imagine processes (particularly in biology, physics, and chemistry) in order to fully comprehend why something works in the way it does. With these methods, I focus on visual, audio, and logical learning, although my methods will constantly adapt to each student's different learning strengths.
