About Adrian
Hi, I'm Adrian.
I'm an enthusiastic and approachable tutor offering National 4/5 and Higher English tuition. I recently graduated from the University of St Andrews with a First-class Honours degree in Philosophy. Alongside my Philosophy degree, I spent two years studying English Literature at undergraduate level, and I achieved A1 grades in both National 5 and Higher English.
My lessons are always tailored to individual students' needs and abilities. Whether they struggle with RUAE, folio writing, set-text analysis, critical essays, essay structure, or exam technique, I focus on giving them practical tools they can use independently. Rather than simply teaching students formulas to memorise, I help them understand what a question is really asking, why a particular approach works, and how to apply it to unfamiliar questions.

Every student is different, so I adapt my lessons to suit the individual. However, my general approach is built around four things: understanding, practice, feedback and adaptation.
1. Identify the student's strengths and weaknesses
In the first lesson, I'll get a clear picture of where the student is currently performing well and where they need the most support. We'll then establish some specific goals for our lessons.
2. Build understanding
We'll work through the topics and question types the student finds most difficult, using targeted activities and examples. I want students to understand why an answer works, rather than simply memorising a formula.
3. Put it into practice
Students will regularly practise the skills we've covered through questions, passages and essay work. I'll give clear, constructive feedback and identify exactly what they can do to improve.
4. Adapt and build I'll keep track of progress and adjust our plan as the student's needs change.
As their weaker areas improve, we'll build on their strengths and gradually introduce more challenging material. I also believe that students learn best when they are actively involved in the lesson. I aim to keep sessions engaging and encouraging while still making sure that we're using our time productively.
Finally, I'll communicate regularly with students and parents/guardians, so everyone knows what we're working on, where progress is being made, and what we should focus on next.
