About the lesson

-for different levels and learning purposes, I apply various pedagogy, such as communicative method, PBL, grammar translation, gamification, and provide i+1 scaffolding, lower cognitive loads by making my classes inviting yet with appropriate challenges.

-Who This Is For: Intermediate to upper-intermediate learners (HSK 3-5, GCSE/A-Level Chinese, or university students) aiming for exam success or real-world fluency. My C2 English ensures seamless explanations of abstract grammar, while my native Mandarin brings authentic cultural context. Lessons are fully online via Zoom, with shared screens, interactive whiteboards, and breakout rooms for pair work when applicable.

Warm-Up (5 min): I kick off with a quick Tone Toss game on Zoom's whiteboard. Students listen to a sentence and drag tone marks to the correct syllables. This activates phonetic awareness without cognitive overload.

i+1 Input (15 min): Using the communicative method, I present a short video clip or image sequence just above the student’s current level. For intermediate learners, this might be a 90-second vlog about ordering bubble tea. We extract 3-4 key sentence patterns together, with grammar-translation method used sparingly to clarify tricky structures (e.g., 把 sentences). I annotate the shared screen in real time.

PBL Task (20 min): Students work on a mini project-based challenge. For example, planning a weekend trip to Chengdu using only Chinese. They draft an itinerary in the chat, and I provide scaffolding through guiding questions rather than corrections. This lowers anxiety while maintaining appropriate challenge. For exam prep students, the project pivots to a timed HSK writing prompt with peer-review elements.

Gamified Review (8 min): We wrap up with Zoom quiz covering the lesson’s target language. Points are awarded for creativity, this keeps cognitive load manageable and builds confidence.

Wrap-Up (2 min): Students output a 30-second summary about what they learned. I send personalized feedback and a Challenge Card (one tricky sentence to decode before next class) within 24 hours.
