About Luisa

I am doing my post-graduate degree at Oxford and have an undergrad degree in International Relations from King's College London, but my interests & teaching topics go way beyond that.

Since I was born in Berlin, I speak very clear German without any dialect. I went to international schools from middle school on, so I was also in the position of being a second-language learner myself and can relate to the struggles, but also the passion, of learning new languages.

I would love to help you improve your German; whether spoken, written, improving your accent, or simply building your vocabulary. I also help with, or conduct German translations at any level.

About the lesson

I have been teaching students of all levels on Superprof since summer 2020! Throughout this time I have taught absolute beginners; people who were preparing for specific exams; some who were fluent years or even decades ago and want to get back into speaking; intermediate German speakers who feel stuck and want to progress to the next level; and even career diplomats. It's always rewarding to see my students meet their goals!

The lessons are tailored to your aims and expectations, so I offer a free introductory call as an opportunity to get to know each other and for me to find out what it is that you want to learn/improve overall.

Examples of Lesson Types:
- Speaking classes (including grammar and vocabulary)
- Speaking, reading and listening classes (including grammar and vocabulary)
- Exam preparation lessons
- Correcting homework / assignments etc. (different rates apply)
- Translations (different rates apply)

Apart from online lessons, I will translate texts at any level from German to English and vice versa (different rates apply).

Deadly! Luisa is a great teacher: she has designed well structured lessons but allows the student to tailer the time to their specific objectives. For example, a large portion of our lessons are spent in conversation since speaking is the area I most want to improve in. Richard is learning German as a beginner with me and has already made amazing progress. He is always eager to learn and immediately tries to apply what he has learned in real life and in our next lessons. He also has a great sense of humor which make the lessons very fun and we learn a lot of colloquial German together too!

Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
German is my mother tongue, but I also speak English at a native level because of my secondary and higher education which was entirely in English.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
I would say Romy Schneider who played "Sissi," the German princess who married the Austrian emperor, in the Sissi movies. Her German is truly beautiful and makes you fall in love with the language all over again.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
Germans always slap their thighs, say "so!" and stand up when they want to leave a party or dinner. It's really funny - you should try to look for this behavior in restaurants.
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
I always want to keep speaking German because it is my mother tongue and because it's such a complex and beautiful language. Indeed - it's the language of philosophy.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
The pronunciation is key and this is best improved through speaking lessons!
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
I have been a second language learner myself a lot of times so I can emphasize with my students struggles: I studied English and French and am currently learning Luxembourgish and Italian.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Travel has not helped me improve my German, but it has opened my mind to all cultures and languages and I am eager to learn about these and to meet students from different backgrounds.
What makes you a Superprof in language?
I speak 3 languages (German, English, French) and am always learning new ones (Italian and Luxembourgish). I can emphasize with my students struggles and want to make their class experience super fun and but also challenging. Remember: What doesn't challenge you, won't change you!  But if I had to name one thing that I love about these lessons, it is that I always laugh so much with my students and love to see them improve.
