About Josh

I am Josh, a native Japanese speaker and an NYU student with prior teaching experience in mathematics and language-focused instruction. I approach tutoring with patience, structure, and clear communication, ensuring students feel supported as they build confidence in a new language. I value professionalism, adaptability, and creating a comfortable learning environment tailored to each student’s goals and pace.

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor is structured, patient, and focused on building real understanding rather than rote memorization. As a native Japanese speaker, I emphasize clear explanations in English while gradually increasing exposure to natural Japanese, so students feel supported without being overwhelmed. I focus on grammar foundations, pronunciation, and practical vocabulary, while encouraging students to start speaking early to build confidence.

A typical lesson begins with a brief review of previous material, followed by the introduction of a new concept through examples and guided practice. Lessons usually include a balance of grammar explanation, listening and speaking exercises, and short reading or writing practice, depending on the student’s goals. I adapt each lesson to the student’s pace and interests, and I provide simple exercises or review material to reinforce learning between sessions.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to combine native-level language intuition with a structured, beginner-friendly teaching style. As an NYU student with teaching experience, I am used to breaking down complex ideas into clear, manageable steps and tailoring lessons to different learning styles. I focus on helping students understand why the language works the way it does, not just what to memorize.
