About Lai

Hi, I'm Lai! I'm originally from China and have been living in Sydney for the past few years.

I'm a University of Sydney graduate and currently studying a Master of Teaching (Early Childhood). I've also had experience teaching Mandarin one-on-one, which I've really enjoyed!

I've studied other languages myself, so I know what it's like to struggle with pronunciation, forget a word you've learned a hundred times, or understand everything someone says but have no idea how to reply.

That's partly why I enjoy teaching Mandarin. I like sharing my language and culture, but I also enjoy getting to know my students and finding out what makes learning interesting for them.

Whether you're learning Chinese for school, work, travel or just for fun, I'd love to be part of your learning journey!

About the lesson

Whether you're completely new to Mandarin, learning Chinese at school, or already speak it and just want more practice, you're welcome to join my lessons!

I usually start by finding out a little about your Chinese level, interests and what you'd like to get out of our lessons. If you prefer a more structured approach, we can work through pronunciation, pinyin, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters step by step. If you'd rather focus on speaking, we can practise everyday conversations, explore topics you're interested in or work on sounding more natural in Mandarin.

I also enjoy making lessons a little more creative, especially for younger students. I've taught Chinese one-on-one to primary school children, using games, stories and simple role-play activities to help them learn and practise new expressions.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although shorter sessions are available for younger children.

I'm happy to work with students of different ages and levels, and we can always adjust the lessons as we go depending on what you find helpful.
