About James
I have been a musician for over 35 years now, and I still love it! As well as playing the guitar every day, I gig in local bars and pubs, playing (and singing) songs from the '50s up to now - and it never gets boring (for me...!). I equally love playing and teaching acoustic and electric guitar; from singer-songwriter 'strummery' to face-melting solos, it's wonderful to be part of someone's musical journey, and I am always excited to guide them along a path that can provide such joy.

When I teach, I love finding the best way of communicating the information - everyone is different, everyone learns differently, and it's my job to find the way that most effectively leads to that "a-ha!" moment when it all comes together. As well as the basics of guitar and music theory, I find out what my students WANT to learn - be it a style, band or artist - and build lessons around that. I encourage creativity; learning soloing techniques and scales, improvising, even songwriting. I see teaching a musical instrument as sharing an important life-tool, one that can be a new hobby, a fun skill occasionally picked-up, as well as something that can aid positive mental health. I have an A-Level in Music and Music Technology, as well as 20 years' experience in private tutoring. I am a semi-professional musician, in that I regularly gig in pubs and bars. My lessons are for any age - I have taught 4 year-olds up to retirees. As I am now exclusively focusing on online lessons, I think a minimum age of 7 is suitable. My lessons are normally either 30 mins or 1 hour, although I can be flexible (20 mins, 45 mins) if that better suits the student.
