About Ryan

I am a qualified UK teacher, former school leader, exam marker and specialist tutor, and the founder of Ryan Varco Tuition, with more than 12 years’ experience in education.

During my career, I have worked as Head of English, Head of Maths and Head of Key Stage, as well as a curriculum developer and teacher coach. This gives me a deep understanding of how children learn, how they are assessed and how academic success is built over time.

I specialise in supporting international families preparing for entrance to leading UK independent schools and selective international schools. I work entirely online, allowing me to support students wherever they are based.

For families applying to UK schools from overseas, the admissions process can feel particularly difficult to navigate. Different schools use different assessments, terminology and expectations, while students may also be unfamiliar with UK-style question types and exam conventions. I help families understand what their target schools require and create a clear preparation strategy around those requirements.

Through Ryan Varco Tuition, my work goes beyond individual tutoring sessions. I combine expert teaching with assessment, strategic planning and ongoing guidance, helping parents understand where their child currently stands, what needs to improve and how we will work towards their target schools. This reflects my wider approach of providing personalised preparation and guidance throughout the admissions journey.

Students I have supported have secured offers from many of the UK’s leading independent schools, including Eton College, Westminster School, Winchester College, St Paul’s School, St Paul’s Girls’ School, North London Collegiate School, King’s College School Wimbledon, Wycombe Abbey, Brighton College, Sevenoaks School, City of London School and Godolphin and Latymer School.

My aim is not simply to prepare students for an entrance assessment, but to develop the knowledge, confidence, independence and academic skills they need to thrive in a demanding new school environment.

About the lesson

Every international student arrives with a different educational background, set of strengths and target-school requirements. My one-hour online lessons are therefore individually tailored rather than following a generic entrance-exam programme.

I provide specialist preparation for:

• UKiSET
• CAT4
• ISEB Pre-Test
• 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+ entrance assessments
• School-specific entrance examinations
• English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning
• Entrance to UK independent schools from overseas
• Selective international-school entrance

Preparation begins by identifying the student’s current strengths, gaps and readiness for their target schools. I then create a structured programme focused on the areas that will have the greatest impact.

Where students are unfamiliar with UK-style assessments, I explicitly teach them how to approach question formats, terminology, timing, reasoning tasks and examination expectations, rather than assuming they already understand the system.

Lessons combine clear explanations, focused teaching, carefully selected exam-style practice, proven strategies and targeted feedback.

My teaching is calm, structured and carefully scaffolded. Students are appropriately challenged while receiving the support and explanations they need to make meaningful progress without becoming overwhelmed. This mirrors the personalised, scaffolded approach described in your wider tutoring philosophy.

Preparation is not simply about completing practice papers. I develop the underlying English, mathematical and reasoning skills students need while teaching them how to approach unfamiliar questions, manage time effectively, analyse mistakes and perform confidently under examination conditions.

This personalised approach has helped students secure offers from schools including City of London School for Girls, Guildford High School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, South Hampstead High School, Hampton School, Dulwich College, Royal Grammar School Guildford, Whitgift School, Latymer Upper School, Highgate School, Alleyn’s School and Reigate Grammar School.

For international families in particular, I want there to be a clear plan: what the target schools require, where the student is currently performing and exactly what we need to do to close the gap.
