About Ward

I have worked full time for 35 years in the professional performance world of classical music, chiefly as a conductor (opera and symphony), opera company Artistic Director at Lyric Opera of Kansas City (17 seasons, 72 productions), and Assistant Professor (three years) at the University of Southern California.

My deep experience, knowledge, and love for singer/artists is well known within the profession, and I greatly enjoy helping developing artists achieve the highest levels of professional performance standards of excellence.

I have spent my entire career as an active professional, with my initial training years at Houston Grand Opera (eleven seasons), where I rose to the position of Resident Conductor and conducted performances and complete productions of over 20 works. Thus, my teaching and guidance is based on my long years of professional performance and leadership. I have auditioned thousands of singers and hired hundreds, including mezzo Joyce DiDonato and tenor Michael Fabiano (among many others) at an early stage in their careers.

I will give you a clear, unvarnished view of what you will need to achieve in order to be competitive in this challenging profession. Despite the many difficulties, I firmly believe that the vocal artist/performer has an exalted place in this world, and I dedicate myself to creating a supportive teaching environment as well as ongoing honest evaluation of the artists who come to me for assistance.

When we work together, I commit to making each session valuable to you—just as the many exceptional musicians and teachers did with me who dedicated their time and effort to my development.

About the lesson

In depth language study and diction, performance practice, stylistic interpretation, and the encouragement of a singer’s individual spirit of expression are pillars of my teaching method.
