About Paul
I was inspired to pursue a career in teaching by my undergraduate organic chemistry professor, who introduced me to this field at a time when I didn’t even like chemistry and demonstrated how to use one’s own enthusiasm to teach others. I went on to earn my PhD in organic chemistry from Columbia University, during which I tutored many students in chemistry. After my post-doctoral studies, I joined the faculty at DePaul University in Chicago where I was one of the lead organic chemistry instructors for 13 years and was repeatedly nominated by students for the university’s Excellence in Teaching Award. I taught a wide range of organic courses: Organic Chemistry 1-3, Organometallics, Spectroscopy, Survey of Organic Chemistry (for nursing students), and the graduate courses Organic Synthesis and Physical Organic Chemistry. I have since changed career paths but still have a desire to share my enthusiasm for chemistry and to help others succeed.

I believe anyone can come to learn organic chemistry, but the path to success looks different for each student. As an educator who is passionate about this subject I aim to work with you to find the approach that works best for you so that you can succeed.
I recognize that almost no one takes organic chemistry because they want to. Often, it is required as part of a student’s degree. With that in mind I approach teaching as a means of helping students achieve their academic and career goals, by guiding them through organic chemistry. It is my hope that this subject becomes something the students have a better opinion of after completing the course and perhaps even find interesting.
I am open to helping students at all levels, no matter how prepared or confident you may or may not feel with the material. Don’t think you must have very specific questions to get help. As an experienced chemistry educator, I can get to the root of your struggles with a few practice problems and discussion. Let me help you navigate your way to success in organic chemistry.
