About Sophia
Hello! I’m a recent graduate from the University of Oxford and I teach Latin and Ancient Greek. I am completely proficient in both, with a special interest in Ancient Greek.
My aim is to help you see Latin and Greek as enjoyable puzzles to decode instead of just frustrating homework - I’ve been studying the two languages since I was 10 at the Dragon school, so I completely understand the struggle! Working closely with your style of learning and the specific areas you find difficult will make all the difference to your understanding, and I’m sure our sessions will get you feeling confident in your language skills in no time!
MY EXPERIENCE:
- Intensely tutoring my 13 yr old sister for her internal Greek exams, completely transforming her grades
- Running a weekly Latin & Greek clinic for younger students at my secondary school, St Edward’s Oxford
- Helping pupils with their Oxbridge applications and speaking to parents about any concerns they have
- e.g. Last year I helped my neighbour with her Oxford application: We reworked and polished her personal statement to suit her particular academic history and aspirations, and we went through the ins-and-outs of the Oxbridge interview process. She’s now an impressive Classics undergraduate at Regents Park, University of Oxford!
- Helped a pupil from Shanghai with interview prep for a UK boarding school - with success!
- Making revision schedules with students trying to organise their studying efficiently
MY CLASSIFICATIONS:
St Edward’s School, Oxford:
- GCSEs: Latin A* (100% in all 4 papers), Classical Greek A*
- A Levels: Latin A*, Classical Greek A
University of Oxford:
- BA Classics with Oriental studies: 2:1

METHOD:
My lessons are 1 hr long. I usually teach each student 1 or 2 classes per week, but if you want intensive tutoring we can definitely look into squeezing in up to 5 per week. I’ll set homework and share helpful learning resources.
I've decided to focus on beginners up to GCSE level because I strongly believe that the early years are the most important - a good foundation is essential.
(a) FILLING IN THE GAPS:
Primarily, I’m here to help you with any topics you’re finding difficult at school. We’ll work through the issue at hand with a fine tooth-comb, and then practise what we’ve learned with exercises and translations. To track your progress I’m happy setting homework to consolidate what we’ve done together, and we'll go through your answers at the start of the next lesson.
(b) GENERAL CONSOLIDATION:
If you’d rather use our sessions for more general reinforcement, I’ll select passages that we’ll translate in class together, brushing up on any grammar and syntax questions that crop up. Homework will be revision, e.g. verb tables/vocab lists/syntax structures. I’ll follow up by testing you on them at the beginning of the next class.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, I want to provide a space where you can make as many mistakes as you need to. Nothing kills your confidence like misunderstanding something your teacher said and feeling embarrassed to ever ask about it again - so that's why I'm here!

Sophia has a wonderful sense of calm and patience and is able to make most anyone feel comfortable and confident in any learning environment. She has helped younger students at her school and her sister tremendously. Sophia has always had an organised and efficient approach to learning which she also is able to make enjoyable. She even taught me some Greek before her A levels so that I could test her on certain aspects of her syllabus! The thing is she absolutely loves Classics- so it naturally inspires learning.
She’s also kind and has a hilarious sense of humour.
Sophia is a multi-award winning student of Latin, Greek and the Classics. She has a great love and passion for the Latin. Her knowledge of the language and the civilisation surrounding it is extensive and thorough. She is an enthusiastic and fun teacher; and she also happens to be a truly good, kind and lovely person to be around. Hire her immediately and let the learning begin!
