About Alexander

I received my doctorate in Cognitive Archaeology (evolution and development of the mind) from the University of Oxford in March 2021. I have previous degrees in Environmental History and Philosophy. I come from a multicultural background and have taught at the university level in Greece, the United States, and the United Kingdom. I have experience teaching the following courses: Introduction to World Archaeology; The Nature of Archaeological and Anthropological Enquiry; Perspectives on Human Evolution; Archaeology and Anthropology; Landscape and Ecology; Aegean Art and Culture; The American Civil War; History of Science and Technology; History of Japan; Introduction to Religious Studies; Introduction to Philosophy; Introduction to Ethics; and general writing skills.

I am committed to both the intellectual excellence of my students as well as their mental well-being. I am trained in theory and provide a highly challenging intellectual environment. However, I am also patient, empathetic, and generous with my time. I am a researcher, but I am fundamentally committed to teaching and equipping students with the analytical skills and imagination required to successfully navigate a complex world. I will negotiate my rate based on economic need.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring follows the discursive format of a typical Oxford tutorial. I assess an individual’s knowledge and comprehension of a topic through written work and direct questioning. My principal aim is to provide the student with an appreciation of a topic’s complexity, a conceptual framework for incorporating and reasoning through new information, improved writing skills and an awareness of the resources for further research and analysis. My lesson typically runs for an hour. I have ten years of teaching experience in a broad range of topics in the Humanities and Social Sciences. I have tutored for three years at Keble College, two years at Hertford College and will begin tutoring for St. John's this spring. To date, three quarters of my graduating students have received Firsts and the rest a 2:1. I am happy to teach secondary school students preparing to enter university, undergraduates seeking extra support and persons wishing to continue their education.
